24 3. We drink too many of our calories!

25 4. We don’t get enough exercise
For Children and youth aged 5–17, the World Health Organizations recommends at least 60 minutes of moderate-vigorous intensity physical activity daily. Amounts of physical activity greater than 60 minutes provide additional health benefits. Most of the daily physical activity should be aerobic (exercise that promotes the circulation of oxygen through the blood and is associated with an increased rate of breathing. Examples include running, swimming, and bicycling). For adults, to improve overall cardiovascular health, the American Heart Association suggests at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise (or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity). Thirty minutes a day, five times a week is an easy goal to remember. Pg #42 25

26 5. People are uneducated! - they believe media and advertising
- don’t buy what you see on TV and don’t buy foods that make health claims Pg #42 26

27 Essential Nutrients 1. Fat 2. Carbohydrates 3. Protein 4. Water
Essential Nutrient: 6 nutrients our body cannot produce enough of on it’s own. 1. Fat 2. Carbohydrates 3. Protein 4. Water 5. Vitamins 6. Minerals Energy Nutrients- Has calories. Gives the body energy Non-Energy Nutrients No Calories. Does NOT give the body energy

28 Nutrition Unit: Calories
Your body gets it’s energy from the 3 Energy Nutrients: Fat Protein Carbohydrates Your body burns (metabolizes) these 3 essential nutrients to produce ENERGY which is measured in calories.

29 How Many Calories Should I Eat Per Day?
Fill in the worksheet together on the doc cam!

30 Calories YOU should eat per day…
Estimate your weight. Estimate your activity level. Calculate what your TOTAL calories per day should be to maintain your CURRENT weight.

31 Total Calories per Day Check???
1 lb = 3,500 calories Total Calories per Day Check??? Probably somewhere between 1200 and 4000 calories.

32 *The healthiest and safest way lose or gain weight is 1-2 lbs./week
When gaining or losing weight, you want to be safe and think about it being maintainable for a lifetime… *The healthiest and safest way lose or gain weight is 1-2 lbs./week

33 EXIT SLIP One thing that I would change about the food I eat is ____________________ because of __________________. One thing that surprised me about obesity is ____________ because of __________________.

34 Joe's Calories

35 Joe is a 16-year old teenager. He is 6’0 and weighs 250 lbs. Here is
his typical food consumption for 1 day: Breakfast – 2 scrambled eggs, 2 pieces of bacon, 1 piece of toast, a glass of orange juice Snack – 1 Snickers candy bar Lunch – 2 pieces of pepperoni pizza, 2 bread sticks, and one cup of milk Snack - a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Dinner – 1 Burrito, 1 cup of rice, a salad, and 1 20 oz. Coke Late night snack- 1 bag of microwave popcorn

36 Joe knows that: 1 lb. =. 3500 calories
Joe knows that: 1 lb. = * 3500 calories. The safest way to lose weight is 1-2 lbs per week If he cuts 500 cal. per day x 7 days = ___?___

37 Be sure to multiply calories by serving per container!
Kraft Macaroni and Cheese-Multiply calories by 3 since there are 3 servings per box and he ate the whole box! Microwave Popcorn - Multiply calories by 3 since there are 3 servings per bag and he ate the whole bag! Be sure to multiply calories by serving per container!

38 **Does not have to be 4 things…
What Joe is eating is totally unhealthy. You may want to substitute healthier foods for his Snickers, for instance, but can figure substitutions for him later. Today, just focus on Joe cutting calories to lose weight. Food(s):______________________ Calories:_________ Total Calories Cut: __500___ **Does not have to be 4 things…

39 FOLLOW-UP: 2. If Joe drops 1 lb. a week for 4 months, how much weight will he lose? 16 lbs. 3. If Joe decides to start exercising on top of cutting those 500 calories, and he begins to walk to school and home everyday (and he’ll walk on the weekends too), he will burn another 500 calories per day. How many lbs. can Joe lose in 4 months? (hint: now he is dropping 1,000 calories per day x 7 days per week and is losing 2 lbs. per week) 32 lbs. !!! If Joe just eats ½ box of Mac 'n Cheese instead of the whole thing, he could lose 1 lb. a week!!

40 Joe lost 32 lbs. without going on a “diet”!!
DON’T THINK “DIET” - If you want to lose weight – make smart food choices, eat less, and exercise more!!! Beverly Hills Diet Slimfast Joe lost 32 lbs. without going on a “diet”!! Nutri- System Weight Loss Pills

41 Being healthy has a lot to do
with better food choices: You don’t have to give up all good tasting foods. It’s all about choices (real/whole foods) and reading food labels to know what you’re eating.
