1 Do Now: Why are these NOT verbs? Dancing in the rain

2 Verbals: Words and phrases that look like verbs, but don’t act like them in a sentence.

3 Types of Verbals: Learn them!
Gerunds Participles Infinitives

4 Gerunds A verb ending in –ing that acts like a noun
Dancing is awesome! Eating is even better! A gerund phrase is a gerund + modifiers Square dancing is corny. Eating nasty food is worse.

5 Participle A verb (ending in –ing, -ed, -t, -n) that functions as an adjective. The dancing fool stepped on my foot. The shaken woman cried over the accident. A participial phrase includes its own modifiers Partially eaten corn will show up about a day later. The idiot dancing over there is annoying.

6 Infinitives A verb using the word “to” in front of it. It can function as a noun, adjective or adverb. To eat is to live. I want to dance. Infinitive phrases includes its modifiers. To dance while eating is dangerous. I want to eat eggrolls in the morning.

7 Pair Response Cards I will read a sentence.
You and your partner will decide what type of phrase is in the sentence. Write it on the white board, but do not lift it until I say GO!

8 What is the verbal? He thinks he'll be able to more than double his salary this year. Being king can be dangerous for your health. The completely rotted tooth finally fell out of his mouth. The running dog chased the fluttering moth. I would like to have won that game. We were thrilled about their having been in contention in the world championships before.

9 Homework: Go through your Narrative.
Add in the three types of phrases. Highlight and Label it for me so that I know you used it.

10 Study Groups Agenda Go over your tests together.
Figure out your weaknesses and make a plan to learn the material. Discuss “Those Winter Sundays” Decide together what the Point of View, Pace and Point of the poem is. Write a note to me telling me what you decided for 1 & 2 above.
