NL Flag History They also legislated the Red Ensign. The Red Ensign was used to represent NL as an independent Dominion within the British Empire in Dominion of NL (civil ensign legislated by British Government) ’s. Contains the Union Jack and great seal of NL.

Other Symbolism The Blue section, most reminiscent of the Union Jack represents our Commonwealth heritage. Official flag from - The Red section and Gold section, larger than the others, represent our future.

Other Symbolism The two triangles outlined in the picture portray the mainland and island parts of our province reaching forward together. A golden arrow points the way to what we believe will be a bright future.

Other Symbolism Christian Cross, the Beothuck and Naskapi ornamentation, the outline of the maple leaf in the centre of the flag, a triumphant figure and our place in the space age. The image of the trident represents our continued dependence on the fishery and the resources of the sea.

Some believe it was actually an official flag of Newfoundland but this is not the case It originated in the 1880’s as the flag of a Roman Catholic Fraternal (the star of the sea) group in St. John’s, NL. One of the oldest recognized flags in the world
