Ophthalmic Procedures: Pertaining to the Eye
Cataract Enucleation Pterygium Excision Retinal Procedures Scleral Buckle Vitrectomy Argon Laser Retinal Repair Trabeculectomy Note- For ophthalmic procedures, most patients are expected to follow up the next day

Cataract Phacoemulsification: Removal of cloudy lens and insertion of intraocular lens (IOL)
Indications: Cloudy lens PreOp Care: Eye drops Complications: Infection Retinal detachment Clouding of the capsule (YAG is indicated) Expectations: Slight discomfort Post Op Care: Wear a shield for 1 week during sleep Avoid strenuous activity Avoid bending down

Enucleation: Surgical removal of the entire eye
Indications: Severe eye injury Eye cancer Unmanageable pain in blind eye Complications: Hemorrhage Infection Post Op Care: Pressure bandage in place Pain management Prosthetic eye placement after 5 days

Pterygium Excision Pterygium: growth on eye’s conjunctiva:
Pterygium Excision Pterygium: growth on eye’s conjunctiva: -correlated to exposure to wind, dust, and UV light from the sun Indications: Affected vision by Pterygium Complications: Recurrence of Pterygium Expectations: Quick recovery Post Op Care: Eye drops

Retinal Repair: Repair retinal tear or reattach detached retina- may be done with lasers, gas bubble, oil, or scleral buckle Indications: Hole or separation of the retina from the tissue May be due to trauma Complications: Infection Bleeding High pressure in the eye Post Op Care: Wear a shield for 1 week during sleep Eye drops Focused positioning Face down or on side Pain Management Retrobulbar block Oil has to be removed

Trabeculectomy: Making a small hole in sclera to drain fluid in order to lower the intraocular pressure (IOP) for patients with glaucoma Indications: Glaucoma; High IOP Complications: (Rare 1:250) Infection Low eye pressure Expectations: Blurry vision up to 2 weeks Severe blurry vision or loss of vision should be reported Post Op Care: Wear a shield for 1 week during sleep Eye drops Avoid strenuous activity Avoid bending down

Retrobulbar Blocks Block of the Retrobulbar space
The area behind the globe of the eye Injected through the lower eyelid Can last up to 6-8 hours Dependent upon anesthetic used
