1 POSSIBILITIES FOR USING BURNT OIL SHALE IN THE POLYMER INDUSTRY
Estonian Plastics Association IX Oil Shale Conference 2017

2 World’s Polymer Production
Over 300 million tons of polymers are produced in the world. 3% of the world’s total crude oil consumption.

3 Bioplastics

4 Biodegradable Plastics

5 Plastics & Energy Consumption

6 European Plastics Industry

7 Plastic Materials Demand in Europe (2015)

8 CEP: Plastics Strategy
Europe’s post-consumer plastic waste: 25 million tons (2014) Plastic waste collected and recycled: 7.7 million tons (2014) Challenging targets under the CEP: 50-60% recycled; alternative raw materials/fillers

9 Plastics: too valuable to become waste

10 Plastics Recycling in Baltics (2015)

11 ORKOS ESTONIA: State of the Art Plastics Recycling Plant
Leading Producer in the Baltic Region High Quality recycled LDPE Volume 5,000 tons of rLDPE a year Located in Maardu

12 Plastic materials EU demand per polymer

13 Polymer Fillers In Europe the annual demand is over 10 million tons
MAINLY USED: Chalk (CaCO₃) Talc ALTERNATIVES: Based on Biological Resources Based on Consumer Waste Based on latest R&D

14 Burnt Oil Shale (BOS) Mineral Granule
More stable while processing Material temperature stability increases Product gains additional stiffness Mixes well with plastic even in high concentrations BURNT OIL SHALE (ASH) 85% POLYMER 15%

15 Competitive Advantage
BURNT OIL SHALE CHALK (CaCO₃) TALC Needs drying: NO YES YES Needs treating: NO YES YES Needs fineness: Partly Fully Fully Density: g/cm³ g/cm³ g/cm³ Proportion in granule: % % %

16 BOS from Customer Point of View
Higher profitability without compromising quality. Burnt oil shale is hydrophobic = treated chalk (CaCO₃/calcite). Filler proportion is greater: at least 85% of the granule. Higher temperature stability. Productivity increases: e.g. the film while processing needs less time for cooling.

17 BOS Project Today The R&D is based on fly ash.
Europe’s biggest polymer producers has shown their interest. Product certification is in process.

18 BOS Mineral Granule Product has proven its high quality and cost-efficiency in various sectors: automotive industry; building & construction industry; packaging industry. Companies tested BOS Mineral Granule: Estiko Plastar AS; EstPak Plastik AS; HAKA Plast OÜ.

19 Strategy 2018 Finding a strategic partner. 2019
Estimated time for the initial project: 12 months. 2020 Development of the production plant. First stage: annual manufacturing capacity up to 0.5 million tons of BOS Granules.
