2. The AquaFish ACE Main Objective
To foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the production of high skilled fit-for-purpose critical mass of scientists for improved aquaculture and fisheries management in order to enhance food, nutrition and economic security in Eastern and Southern Africa.

The Finance Agreement was signed between Malawi Government and World Bank on 5th August 2016
National Steering Committee was formed and held its 1st meeting on 23rd September, 2016.
The Performance and Funding Agreement was signed between Ministry of Finance and AquaFish on 10th November, 2016.
Date of Effectiveness was declared on 6th December, 2016 for AquaFish.

4. The 1st advert was sent out in August/September 2016

The 1st advert was sent out in August/September 2016
Selection was done in October 2016 for 1st semester that started in November 2016.
2nd Advert sent out in Jan/February 2017, and selection done in March for 2nd semester intake that started April 2017.

7. Africa Centre of Excellence in Public Health and Herbal Medicine (ACEPHEM)

8. Objectives for ACEPHEM
To train students in public health and/or herbal medicine research at PhD and MSc level
To collaborate with national and international partners in research and faculty/student exchange programs

The centre was officially launched in-country on 1st March 2017

Money was transferred into ACEPHEM account on 31st March 2017
Interviews for key personnel for the centre have been conducted
Recruitment of students for MSc & PhD is on going
Seminars held in different institution to advertize centre’s activities

Local steering committee has been established (first meeting on 19th April)
International Advisory Board members communicated to and agreed to serve
MOUs with national and international partners sent and waiting for signing
Development of new curricula to enhance postgraduate studies is underway
Procurement of materials to facilitate centre’s activities is going on

12. Challenges faced by both centres
Financial difficulties before money was disbursed as we had to depend on our institution to lend us money
It took long to have the money disbursed
Struggling to attract foreign students
For AquaFish, another challenge is that the ambitious target student numbers set is too much to accommodate everyone with stipend, hence difficult to have students without stipend.
At times you lack proper office to address your queries in satisfying manner.
