Birthdays Math Star Students Literacy 9/18-9/22 Calendar
We will continue our Jolly Phonics this week with the letters u,l,f,b. Please continue to practice them daily at home. Our book of the week is “A Party” and our sight words are “a” and “like”. We will talk about different types of parties and things that you need for a party. In Reading Workshop, we will continue the first unit of study which is “Launching”. They will learn that good readers listen, share their ideas, and practice reading. They will look closer at the difference between letters, words, and sentences and using spaces between words. Students will also begin an important component of Reading Workshop: “Read to Self.” With practice, they will build stamina each day to read for longer periods of time. I will model for them the procedures and 3 ways to read a book: read the words, read the pictures, retell a familiar story. Read to Self will become a daily part of our Reading Workshop. Math This week students will finish Module 1. They will sort objects by a stated rule and describe the sorting. A large aspect of math is to have students explain their thinking. When they can explain why they made decisions, or how they solved a problem, they have a deeper level of knowledge and understanding. We will also continue class graphing. We have made several already: “How Many Letters in our Names”, “How Do You Get to School”, and “Our Favorite Color”. Gathering information and collecting data are skills we will work on all year!
