1 SENIOR CAPSTON DESIGN PROJECT
ABET Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology SENIOR CAPSTON DESIGN PROJECT STATISTICS & RELIABILITY CRITERIA By Prof. Reda Abdulaal 1426 H G

2 Requirements to ABET EC 2000
Statistical analysis should be performed Design reliability should be assessed In some cases, risk assessment may be performed

3 Requirements to ABET EC 2000
Statistical Analysis

4 Set of methods for Collecting, Organizing, and Analyzing
Statistical Analysis What is Statistic? It is SCIENCE of DATA Pieces of information gathered by individuals and/or organizations to gain knowledge Set of methods for Collecting, Organizing, and Analyzing

5 What is Statistic? It is SCIENCE of DATA
Set of methods of Collecting, Organizing, and Analyzing pieces of information to gain knowledge

6 Discrete or Continuous
Types of DATA DATA Qualitative Quantitative Ordinal Nominal Interval Ratio Can be recorded (cost, weight, etc.) Can be counted (people, trees, etc.) Discrete Discrete or Continuous Can be assigned (ownership status: 1-owner, 2-rent) Can be arranged in order And difference between number has meaning: (IQ) Can be arranged in order (excellent, very good, good) Discrete: Data that contains only integers As Interval but there is Definite zero point (no. of defects) Continuous: Data that contains any value over a particular range

7 DATA Pieces of information gathered by individuals and/or organizations to gain knowledge Population Sample Set of all possible information that is interest Portion of the population from which information is gathered Data may be difficult to obtain Data may be expensive to collect WHY ?

8 WHO ? WHY ? Scientists Chemists Engineers Decision makers Economists
Every one wants to gain knowledge Inform the public Provide comparisons Explain outcomes Predict for future Establish a relationship Estimate unknown quantity

9 Set of methods of Collecting, Organizing, and Analyzing
SCIENCE Set of methods of Collecting, Organizing, and Analyzing

10 Data COLLECTION Techniques & Tools
Using available information Observing Interviewing (face to face) Administrating written questionnaires Data compilation forms Eyes and other senses, watch, microscope Tape recorder, checklist, questionnaire Open/Close questionnaire

11 Set of methods of Collecting, Organizing, and Analyzing
SCIENCE Set of methods of Collecting, Organizing, and Analyzing

12 Data ORGANIZATION Techniques
Graphically Charts, graphs, … Numerically Tables The type of organization depends on the type of analysis required

13 Tabular vs. Graphical Sectors Rank Revenue (SR million) Net Profit
Industrial 1 26280 3 2326 Banking 2 10397 4199 Electricity 7887 4411 Services 4 3656 5 681 Cement 1359 1231 Agricultural 6 1114 95 Total 50693 12943

14 Tabular vs. Graphical

15 Set of methods of Collecting, Organizing, and Analyzing
SCIENCE Set of methods of Collecting, Organizing, and Analyzing

16 Data ANALYSIS Once the data is organized, various quantities associated with the data can be computed. Mean Standard Deviation Correlation Moving average Exponential Smoothing EXAMPLES

17 What is Statistic? It is SCIENCE of DATA
It is Set of methods of Collecting, Organizing, and Analyzing pieces of information to gain knowledge

18 Requirements to ABET EC 2000
Design Reliability

19 Definitions Reliability Design Reliability
How long will the system operate before failure? Design Reliability The level of reliability inherent in the system as designed or manufactured

20 Design Reliability Level of Reliability affects by: Weakness in design
Flaws in materials Defects from manufacturing process Maintenance errors Improper operation

21 What is required? Design requirements to minimize the human errors:
Safety instructions Maintenance rules Operation manual Apply standards

22 Requirements to ABET EC 2000
Risk Assessment

23 Definitions Risk Assessment
Formal and systematic analysis to identify and quantify probabilities and consequences for personnel, environment, production etc of all failures of equipment/installation/facility

24 What is required? Requirements to minimize the risk:
Recommendation report Use available tags
