3 Open Door Policy China President McKinley and Secretary of State John Hay Idea that all countries should be allowed to trade with China Agreement among all European powers to allow China to trade with all nations freely. Also, the Chinese would be able to collect tariffs on a equal basis Goal: To keep any one power from total control of China

4 Roosevelt Corollary Extension of the Monroe Doctrine-which was a United States policy of opposing European colonialism in The Americas beginning in 1823. Roosevelt Corollary-warned that disorder in Latin America might, “force the U.S. to the exercise of an international police power” Warns European powers to stay out of Western Hemisphere affairs U.S. would now use force to protect its economic interest in Latin America

5 Roosevelt- Big Stick Big Stick Theory: “Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.”- West African proverb Basically, yelling will do no good, use your will and way to get things done. Determination. Could use military force

6 Taft’s Dollar Diplomacy
The goal of Taft's Dollar Diplomacy was: ● To further the economic power of the United States and promote trade in Latin America, the Caribbean, West Africa and East Asia ● To prevent foreign powers from gaining, or increasing, their financial foothold in key markets guaranteed loans would be made to strategically important foreign countries.(Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Colombia, China, Liberia)

7 Wilson- Moral Diplomacy
Moral Diplomacy was a diplomatic approach in which support was given to countries whose moral beliefs aligned with that of the United States. Promotes the growth of the nation's ideals and damages nations with different ideologies. Wilson used this to promote the ideas of a democratic government to other nations. Hoped to increase to number of democratic nations.
