For some paragraphs, you want to create an argument
For some paragraphs, you want to create an argument. Which of these are argumentative statements? Summer reading should be eliminated. Everyone should learn how to knit. My favorite thing to do is watch TV. All schools should give out iPads. Abraham Lincoln was born February 12, ”The Breakfast Club” was the best movie ever made.

Sometimes you might be asked for something not arguable, but asked why
Sometimes you might be asked for something not arguable, but asked why? These are almost always personal. My favorite TV show is Leverage because….. I hated summer reading because… It’s hard for me to go to bed on time because…. Keep in mind that many of these also have the element of arguing – you’re trying to convince someone that the show is good, or your bedtime is unfair.

Sample Question: What is one point you would love other people to recognize?
You need to have both an answer and a list of reasons. This is the time to brainstorm. It's good to even come up with several answers, and reasons for both; it allows you to choose the most arguable answer.

Sample Answer: The 1971 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is far better than the 2005 remake with Johnny Depp. Reasons: The songs were amazing. Johnny Depp’s acting is very bad. The Oompa Loompas are badly done. Modern movie had bad humor. The 2005 added unnecessary backstory. The weird boat ride was amazing. Wilder’s Wonka is enigmatic. Wilder’s Wonka is comedic plus sinister vs. Depp’s childish and crazy Wonka. YOU LOSE GOOD DAY SIR

Now you want to play with your reasons
Now you want to play with your reasons. Put them into categories (think Sesame Street) and see which is strongest. Acting Iconic Moments Lost Songs Boat ride YOU LOSE Johnny Depp’s Smile Enigmatic Sinister/comedic Which set of reasons is the most persuasive?

Paragraph Structure 1. Your Claim(brief summary of topic and argument) 2. Expand/Transition (connect your topic (claim) to your first piece of evidence) 3. POINTABLE EVIDENCE supporting your point (facts, usually pulled from text. SPECIFIC.) 4. Prove your point (explanation – explain how/why your evidence supports your point) 5. Repeat 3-4 until you’ve proven all your points 6. Concluding sentence. Don’t forget transition phrases and sentences!

Sample Paragraph (1) The original Willy Wonka movie, made in 1971, is far superior to the 2005 Johnny Depp remake, thanks to the modern movie’s choice to eliminate iconic moments and cast Depp. (2) Both movies are based off Roald Dahl’s novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and feature a reclusive chocolate factory owner who decides to allow five children to tour his factory. (T) The original movie featured several intense and iconic moments that allow it to continue as a beloved movie to this day. (3.1) One of the most important things that made the old movie popular were the songs. Some of them, such as “Pure Imagination,” have been covered dozens of times by musicians, including famous bands such as Maroon 5. (4.1) The fact that these songs continue to exist in popular culture almost fifty years after the movie’s release indicate that it still pleases people.
9
(3.2) Another moment that stands out as something that makes the original movie special is the incredibly strange boat ride through the tunnel in Wonka’s factory. The boat barrels through the chocolate river, while projections of violent images and flashing colored lights splay across the tunnel. While these images flash by, Gene Wilder (playing Wonka) sings a creepy little song. (4.2) This boat ride was intense and potentially frightening to children, but everyone I know speaks of it with love. Most people who grew up on this movie can still sing that song. Cutting the song from the 2005 version was losing something precious.
10
(3.3) While the 2005 movie has essentially vanished from pop culture, memes of Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka continue to this day, especially the “You lose, good day sir!” graphic, as well as the picture of Gene Wilder looking smug, often used for “Oh, you believe X? Tell me more” memes. (4.3) The original movie continuing to exist in modern forms reinforces the idea that it is an important piece of media. (6) It is very rare for a movie’s influence to last almost half a century, especially when its modern remake fades away without a trace. The 1971 Willy Wonka movie has stood the test of time and proved itself as the more valuable edition.

For a full-sized essay, just have more claims.
Big Claim: The single point your essay is trying to prove by using the claims of the body paragraphs. Paragraph Claim: The point this paragraph is going to prove. (have 2-3)
12
For Example: Big Claim: Edgar Allan Poe potentially suffered from a fear of premature burial. Paragraph Claim: Uses of premature burial in The Fall of the House of Usher indicate Poe’s fear. Paragraph Claim: The trapping of the dead wife behind a wall shows both the fear of burial and a fear of death.
