1 Building Challenges with KEVA!

2 KEVA Engineering Challenge

3 NEVER touch another build NEVER Godzilla your build
KEVA Rules: NEVER touch another build NEVER Godzilla your build ALWAYS take down your build from the top down-GENTLY

4 Challenge #1: Build a tower as tall as you in 10 minutes
Using 1 bucket of KEVAS-build the tallest tower Tower #1: Build on the FLAT Tower #2: Build on the EDGE Tower #3: Build UPRIGHT Tower #4: Build using all 3 styles

5 Challenge #2: Bridge Challenge
With one plank touching the floor, build the widest structure With two planks… With four planks… Build a bridge span as wide as possible with only four planks touching the floor or table

6 Challenge #3: Motion (4th and 5th)
Motion video Create a structure that will deliver a ping pong ball into a container that is 12 inches away from the drop point Make the ball bounce into the container (video) Make the ball change directions on its way to the container

7 KEVA-guiding questions:
Questions Use one or more of these questions after an activity to help children think through their discoveries. What did you learn or discover as you built? How is your final structure different from your original concept? What was the most difficult part? How are forces working in your structure? i.e. “ This block was leaning against this wall with a sideways force so I needed to reinforce the wall.” How could you make your structure more attractive or more interesting? What would you do differently the next time you try to build something like this? What can you learn from structures others have built? Tell me about your structure?

8 Challenge #4 2 Dimensional Designs (K-5)
Create a 2D representation of a real object: apple, butterfly* etc Watch PLANE SHAPES Create a 2D design using patterns. Consider pattern repetition. Try: 1)Linear patterns 2) circular patterns and 3) spirals

9 Challenge #5 2 Dimensional Designs (K)
How many different ways can you make a square? How many different ways can you make a triangle? How many different ways can you make a hexagon? Can you use all 3 in one tower? Make a tower using a square, and triangle, and a hexagon

10 Challenge #6 Think like an architect!
Build a tower as tall as yourself. Add patterns/structure to make it more beautiful or interesting.

11 Challenge #7 Speed Building
Work in teams Race to see who can build a tower exactly 5 feet high. _ Twin Towers: Partner with another group and build a twin to their tower then switch!

12 KEVA substitute challenge!
Build the tallest structure you can-but you must use all 3 building styles in your design!

13 Architect Challenge-Watch
Choose and architect and build in that style! Remember the rules: Your building must be structurally sound Your building must serve its function Your building must have good aesthetics Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Antoni Gaudi Frank Gehry Zaha Hadid Frank Lloyd Wright Le Corbusier
