Solution chemistry What are solutions? 1. a mixture of 2 or more substances 2. that is uniform throughout (homogeneous) Individual parts can’t be seen Examples: gas in gas gas in liquids liquids in liquids solid in liquid solid in solid
2
Terms: Solvent the substance that dissolves something else (like water) Solute the substance that dissolves (like salts)
3
3. Molarity (M) Expresses how many moles of solute is dissolved in 1.00 liters of solution Ex: The solution is .25 M HCl. This means that there are .25 moles of solute in 1.00 liters of solution This is the way in which we will express concentration.
4
How would you make a .250 M NaCl solution?
1.Mass out .25 moles NaCl… Note: .25 moles g/1 mole NaCl (Mass out 14.6 g of NaCl) 2. Add water until you have reached the mark on the volumetric flask.
5
The Math The equation 1. How many grams of NaOH are there in 400. ml of a 0.40 M solution?
6
How many moles of HCl are there in 10.0 ml of a 6.0 M solution?
Describe how to make 200. ml of a 0.50 M solution of NaOH
