4. What are HFUTC doing to support my child?
This is an online resource that has been bought by the School to support your child’s progress. They have their own login and are able to access the information on the go as well as in formal revision times.
GCSEpod is a new addition to the many revision tools available to the students. On this site, students can find a great number of podcasts which they can download to their phone, tablet or computer and watch/listen to them in their spare time (such as riding on the bus or train!).

5. Revision Techniques Quantity Quality Flashcards
For key information and facts. You can carry them around with you and test yourself anywhere.

Read the information you want to remember. Cover it up, write out what you remember. Check to see how much you forgot.

Answer the questions, note down your score, revise the topic some more, have another go at the questions later. Did you improve?

Make a card sort
Make a set of cards that you can cut out, mix up and match.
Use them; When you need to remember pieces of information that go together.
Key word cards
Include definitions on the back. You can test yourself on the definitions, sort them into scientifically relevant categories, put them into a sequence.
Describe or explain a process/scenario to someone who does not know it or a classmate.
They can ask questions to fill in any gaps you missed and if they are also revising it may help them understand the work better.
Use it when; Explaining a series of events or a process that has some detail
Graphic organisers
Decide if you are describing, analysing parts, comparing, analysing cause and effect, predicting or evaluating and display your arguments in a graphic organiser. Use it to; look at topics in more detail.
Mind maps
Start with a central theme and organise the information from it, grouped into subtopics. Label the branches with the relationships.
To summarise a whole topic after revising it in detail. Only put in the key words, everything else should come to mind when you read it.
Past exam questions and analysis
Complete some past exam questions. Mark your answers. Fill in the answers you missed. Go through the paper and colour code each topic (Red-need to revise, Amber-Need to go over a few bits again, Green-I’ve got it)
Use it to test your ability to; recall the information you have revised, to answer the question asked, not just write down everything you know, to follow the command words in an exam.

6. What do the new grades mean?
The first new exams for GCSE Maths and English were in summer 2017. The new GCSE exams for Geography, History, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Combined Science, Modern Foreign Languages, Business Studies, Physical Education and Computer Science started this summer 2018.
There's no Foundation Level in the new English GCSEs — students of all abilities will take the same exams.
The government’s definition of a ‘good pass’ will be set at grade 5 for reformed GCSEs.

7. Exam Day Information! If your child is unwell on the day of an exam
Students should make every effort to ensure that they attend all exams. If they miss any, it cannot be taken at any other time.
If they are ill and unable to get to school on the day, you must do the following:
Inform us BEFORE 09:00am on the day of the exam by calling
Get a medical note from your doctor and give the note to Miss Kubicek, the Examinations Officer, as soon as possible.
If medical evidence cannot be provided, parents/carers will be asked to pay the fees for the missed exams.
Routine medical, dental and other appointments should be re-arranged to avoid clashes with examination times.

8. Exam Day Information! If your child is late to an exam
Students that are up to an hour late MAY be allowed to enter the exam room and have the full amount of time depending on their reason for lateness and if it is a one off – this is at the discretion of the centre.
If students are an hour late or more, they will not be allowed to enter the exam room or sit the paper.
Students are advised to leave earlier than normal to ensure they account for unexpected delays such as traffic or problems with public transport.
Parents/Carers will be contacted if students are persistently late.
‘The bus was late’ or ‘I was stuck in traffic’ are not acceptable excuses.

9. Contingency Exam Day Mock Exams
If exams are postponed due to any kind of disruption, they will be rescheduled for Wednesday 26th June, 2019.
All students MUST be available on this date. If an exam is rescheduled for this date and it is missed, it cannot be taken at any other time.

11. English Tips!
Please encourage your child to read their set texts over and over again! They need to know their texts and specific quotes.
Students have the use of Collins Connect to access revision sources for English.
They are also actively encouraged to access GCSE pod for support with Literature.

12. Revision Materials - English
All students have been issued with booklets to help structure their revision (there are 6 in total) and these are being used in form time to support them.
Students have also been issued with a CGP guide for English Language which contains some practice questions.
They also have access to a range of marked responses which will help them ascertain where they can improve.
The students have been ed with booklets containing exam style questions for them to practise at home.

14. Intervention/Extra Support
All students have all been invited to attend an extra session on a Wednesday P8 (which has been running since September)
Students who are working below their target grade have also been invited to attend a more focused intervention session with their teacher to help them brush up on specific skills.

15. The Year 11 Quote Off
This week, the students will also receive a booklet containing a list of key quotations for each text.
They will be challenged to learn these and then compete against each other to demonstrate how many they know.
We have been practising these as starters in classes for some time now so this should be quite straightforward for them.
Do encourage them to talk to you about the key quotations!

Revision guides are available for all of the set texts (priced around £5 on Amazon) CGP ones are popular because they are easy to read!
The Quotation Bank range are also really useful (again priced at around £5 on Amazon) and are available for each text.

17. Maths Tips! www.vle.mathswatch.co.uk Reducing the REDs:
Each half term pupils are given a question level analysis, identifying areas of improvement and strengths These are ‘ragged’.
Pupils will revise each ‘red’ and ‘amber’ topic areas, by watching the clip on Mathswatch, answering the interactive questions and finally completing the worksheet. Ticking off a red/amber as they successfully complete each topic.

This is a free app that students can download onto their phones and combines a number of examination boards to provide over 4,000 questions that students can use to practice. Questions for the Edexcel exam are available on there. You can also track your progress throughout. Once the app has been downloaded, you can access this without needing Wi-Fi.

30. Health and Social Care Tips
Make sure that you have a good understanding of the key words. These are the key words that you will have highlighted in your exercise books. The key words require the proper definitions when you are answering them in the exam e.g. self-image, self-esteem, self-concept, bonding and attachment.
Revise the life stages and what PIES mean. These are key to completing the exam paper.
Remember that in any question where they are asking you to explain anything about the development –they are asking you to relate your answers to the PIES.
Read the last question on the exam paper carefully. This is the highest order thinking question on the exam paper and is where you can achieve the top grades from. Make sure you understand what they are asking you before you start to answer the question.
