1 Craft and Structure Objective Students will be able to compare and contrast the plot structure of two or more texts and analyze how the different plot structures of each text contributes to the creation of mystery, tension, or surprise.

Analyze how an author’s choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it (e.g., parallel plots), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing, flashbacks) create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise. Analyze how a drama’s or poem’s form or structure (e.g., soliloquy, sonnet) contributes to its meaning. Compare and contrast the structure of two or more texts and analyze how the differing structure of each text contributes to its meaning and style.

7 Vocabulary Strategy: Word Analysis
Under “My Definition,” write the definition for each word. Next, use the word in a sentence. Below “My Definition” under “Synonym” write two words that are similar to the vocabulary word. Finally, under “Antonym” write two words that are opposite.

8 Vocabulary Plot: The sequence of events that make up a story
Order: the sequence of events (ex. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th) Mystery: Details of text that is difficult or hard to explain.

9 Vocabulary Surprise : an unexpected event.
Tension: Conflict between characters or self within a story. Structure:the arrangement of elements into a pattern of organization.

10 Vocabulary Soliloquy: a dramatic speech that represents a series of unspoken thoughts. Sonnet: a poem of 14 lines usually rhyming by a fixed scheme.

23 Textual Evidence This text using flashbacks to help build the backstory of the duchess. Through this excerpt we know that the Duke does not like how friendly and open his wife was, which leads us to the suspense of what has happened. We learn that the Duke commanded her to be killed due to her indiscriminate kindness.
