SAGE is a national program promoting gender equity and gender diversity in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) Run by the Australian Academy of Science in partnership with the Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE) SAGE stands for Science in Australia Gender Equity. The SAGE Forum 2014 A 2-day workshop held on 25–26 November 2014
Co-chaired by Professor Brian Schmidt and Professor Nalini Joshi Brought together senior representatives of universities, medical research institutes, science funding agencies, government research organisations, and other stakeholders Considered gender equity issues and identify appropriate solutions for Australia The forum recommended a pilot of Athena SWAN in Australia In November 2014, the Academy hosted the SAGE Forum, bringing together over 140 experts from around Australia who discussed areas of critical impact on gender equity in STEMM. The unanimous consensus was that concerted action is required immediately across the sector. The key recommendation of the Forum was to undertake the Australian Pilot of the Athena SWAN Charter.

What is Athena SWAN? The Athena SWAN Charter is an evaluation and accreditation program The Charter evolved in the United Kingdom through two interrelated activities: Athena Project led by women academics Scientific Women’s Academic Network (SWAN) The Athena SWAN Charter is an evaluation and accreditation program The Charter evolved in the UK through two interrelated activities: the Athena Project, led by women academics, and the Scientific Women’s Academic Network (SWAN) It was founded in 2005 and has had tremendous success in enhancing gender equity for STEMM Through Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, the Charter recognises excellence in employment practices that advance and promote the careers of women and gender minorities in STEMM subjects.

The SAGE Pilot of Athena SWAN
