15 What is symmetry? Both sides of a center line are exactly or nearly the same Like a mirror image This is also known as FORMAL BALANCE in art

16

17 What is a kaleidoscope? a toy consisting of a tube containing mirrors and pieces of colored glass or paper, whose reflections produce changing patterns that are visible through an eyehole when the tube is rotated.

18

19 Our project: Using our names, we will create an abstract piece of art that resembles a kaleidoscope. First, practice writing your name in bubble letters in your sketchbook. Be creative!

20 Follow closely! Fold your 8 ½ x 8 ½ square in half twice
Fold the small square in half to make a triangle Unfold the small triangle and refold it the opposite way You should have a small square with an “x” fold in the middle

21

22 Objective: I will be able to identify and use symmetrical (formal) balance

23

24 Do Now 8/17: Positive space is the area INSIDE of an object
Negative space is the area AROUND an object

25

26 Positive Space Negative Space
How are we using positive AND negative space in our Name Kaleidoscopes? Positive Space Negative Space

27 Objective I will be able to identify and use positive and negative space in my art

28 DEMO The next step is to trace our name using symmetry to fill the square Watch the demonstration

29 What are we working on? Finish drawing your name in bubble letters on your triangle Trace both the front and back in sharpie Begin tracing your name on your 8x8 square using symmetry Flip your triangle over each time you move to a new section (some of them will be backwards) Make sure your letters line up and connect with each other as you trace

30

31 It should be near your Do Now from yesterday.
Take a scoring guide for the project and glue it in your sketchbook and label it Do Now 8/18! It should be near your Do Now from yesterday.

32 Review Objectives: I will be able to identify and use symmetrical (formal) balance. I will be able to identify and use positive and negative space.

33 Review Representational VS Non-representational
Read the passage Answer the questions on a separate piece of paper

34 Today: Finish tracing your name with pencil
Check that all of your letters are connected Carefully trace the letters in Sharpie You can choose to divide your letters or connect them Erase any pencil lines that are showing

35

36 What do you think of when you hear the word unity?
Do Now 1/19: What do you think of when you hear the word unity? Unity: when all parts of a design are working together as a team

37 Today: Choose your colors wisely!
All connecting letters should be the same color! Repeat the same colors throughout to tie your design together! Check your rubrics to make sure you have met all of the requirements!

38 Do Now: Take a “Self Reflection” sheet and put your name on it.
Project: Kaleidoscope Check the boxes that best describe your work on this project. Be honest with yourself. It will not affect your grade. Under “Feedback” provide me feedback about the project. Did you like it? Was it difficult? Easy? Etc. Glue it in your sketchbook and label it “Do Now 1/21/16”

39 Our project is due end of class today!
Check your rubrics to make sure you have met all of the requirements!

41 DO NOW: In art, gluing a piece of artwork to a background paper is called MOUNTING. The background acts as a frame for the artwork. The dimensions of your artwork is 8 ½ x 8 ½ inches. If we were to mount your artwork with a ½ inch border on every side, what size paper would we need for the background?

42 Today: Silently, finish your art projects if you got behind.
If you are finished, you will receive the Abstract Art reading assignment. STAY QUIET! Students who have finished both assignments will have time to free paint after 20 minutes.
