How does the underlined sentence affect the meaning of the text?
Reread the following excerpt from the text: Arnetta’s sister Joan decided she wanted to march, too, but Mr. and Mrs. Streeter refused to allow it. “What am I going to tell my children when they ask me what was I doing during the demonstration? Joan asked. Their mother answered, “You tell your children that you were at home crying because you wanted to participate but you were being obedient to your parents, and your sister was being hardheaded.” Mr. and Mrs. Streeter supported integration but were concerned for their daughter’s safety. “You’ve done your part,” they told Arnetta. “You need to leave this alone.” She convinced them on one issue, though. From then on, they would attend mass meetings with her. How does the underlined sentence affect the meaning of the text? It proves that the young people were much braver than the older generation. It shows that the older generation was not as devoted to the movement as the younger people. It shows that Arnetta’s parents wanted equal rights, but not if their daughter would be hurt. It infers that the Arnetta was not respectful of her parents’ wishes.
