An elephant is huge. An elephant is three feet tall and 250 pounds when it is born. That is like the weight of about five second-grade students. When full grown, it is 11-feet tall and almost 14,000 pounds. That’s about the weight of seven small cars. Because it is so big, an elephant needs a lot of food. In fact, it needs 175 pounds of food every day! It eats hay, vegetables, fruits, and leafy branches. That is a lot of food over a possible 60 years of life. Fortunately, an elephant can be lots of fun. An elephant can also be trained to pick you up and put you on its back. Then, it can take you for a ride.
