1 Steps to Predicting the Products of Chemical Reactions
Regular/Honors Chemistry

2 Do Now: List all types of reactions and their general equation:

3 To Predict Products… Recall: Reaction Types Charges of Ions
How to write formulas Balance Equations

4 Once you classify the reaction, then write the products.
If it is combustion, then just write H2O and CO2 as products. If it is synthesis, write a compound that contains both elements. If it is decomposition, then attempt to break it into two elements or compounds.

5 If it is double replacement, then the cation and anions switch places.
If it is single replacement, then replace the single element with the corresponding element in the compound. A metal will replace the cation in the compound A non-metal will replace the anion in the compound If it is double replacement, then the cation and anions switch places.

6 Super Seven! Remember the elements that exist in diatomic form.
H, N, O, F, Cl, Br and I All exist with two of the element: H2 N2 O2 F2 Cl2 , Br2 , I2

7 Let’s Practice a few: Steps: IDENTIFY REACTION TYPE
CORRECTLY FORM COMPOUNDS/ELEMENTS BALANCE CHARGES TO WRITE FORMULAS BALANCE THE EQUATION

8 Example #1 Predict the products of this reaction. H + O
1. What type of reaction is it? 2. Move the chemical symbols to represent the reaction. 3. Add subscripts to make the oxidation numbers of the elements in the product equal to zero. 4. Balance the equation:

9 Predict the products of this reaction.
Example #2: Predict the products of this reaction.     BaCl2 + Al2(SO4)3 1. What type of reaction is it? 2. Move the chemical symbols to represent the reaction. 3. Add subscripts to make the oxidation numbers of the elements in the product equal to zero. 4. Balance the equation:

10 Write the correct formulas for the products of
Example # 3: Write the correct formulas for the products of Al + CaO 1. What type of reaction is it? 2. Move the chemical symbols to represent the reaction. 3. Add subscripts to make the oxidation numbers of the elements in the product equal to zero. 4. Balance the equation:
