What is Science? Review Lesson 1
2
Applied Science uses pure science to solve problems.
Are all sciences created equal? Pure science seeks to answer questions about how the natural world works. Applied Science uses pure science to solve problems. Psuedoscience= Fake science Beliefs or claims NOT based on scientific method
3
A theory is a hypothesis with lots of support
What is the scientific method? A hypothesis MUST be TESTABLE! Predictions are written as “If…Then…” All science starts with the senses
4
What is the scientific method?
Observation Problem Statement /Question Hypothesis Statement Experiment (Materials/Procedures) Data Analysis Conclusion Statement
5
What variables are in every good experiment? Independent Variable
What you change or manipulate Dependent Variable What you measure Controlled Variables What stays the same in every test
6
Which is Which? 100 teenage males are use Clearasil face wash for 2 months, 100 teenage males use Cetaphil face wash for 2 months. Percentage coverage of acne are measured before and after. Dissolved oxygen levels are tested at two sites in the White Oak River to determine river health. One site has rapids, the other site is slow flowing. Data is collected for one month at each site.
7
Basis of comparison (control group) Replication of findings
What are the rules of scientific method? Objectivity Basis of comparison (control group) Replication of findings Only ONE independent variable at a time
8
Why Do We Use Graphs? •Graphs help us visualize numerical data.
There are several different types of graphs: –Bar graphs are used to show a comparison of multiple objects. –Pie graphs are used to compare the parts of a whole. –Line graphsare used to show the relationship between variables.
9
How do we organize and use data?
D- dependent R- Responding Y- Y-axis M- Manipulated I- Independent X- X-axis
