2 Americans Join the Allies
With the help of American troops and supplies, the Allies turn the tide against Germany

3 Supplying the Allies The American entry into the war made an immediate difference. To ensure supplies reached the Allies the U.S. Navy first helped find & destroy German submarines. Then convoys of navy destroyers escorted ships across the Atlantic.

4 Russian Withdrawal In Nov a second revolution in Russia resulted in the democratic government being overthrown by the Bolsheviks – a group of communists. Led by Vladimir Lenin, the Bolsheviks wanted to end Russia’s participation the war so they could focus on setting up a new Communist state. In March 1918 Lenin signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Germany, surrendering Poland, the Ukraine and other territory to the Germans. Russia’s withdrawal allowed the Germans to move hundreds of thousands of troops from the Eastern Front line of battle to the Western Front in France

5 Germans now launched a powerful offensive against the Allies
Germans now launched a powerful offensive against the Allies. After years of stalemate along the Western Front it suddenly looked as if Germany might win the war. Although American troops arrived in France in June 1917, many months passed before they were ready to fight. When they finally began to fight they helped turn the war around.

6 General John J. Pershing led the American Expeditionary Force in Europe.
The AEF saw its first serious fighting in early June Helped win battles at Chateau-Thierry, Belleau Wood, Verdun. The Battle of the Argonne Forest lasted 7 weeks but the Allies finally pushed back the Germans and Germany was faced with an invasion of their own Country.

7 End of the War With troops in retreat, German military leaders realized they had little chance of winning the war. Germans suffered from severe shortages of food and other essential supplies. On October 4, 1918 the German government appealed to President Wilson for an armistice. Wilson consented under certain conditions:

8 Conditions Germany must accept Wilson’s plan for peace.
Germany must promise not to renew hostilities. All German troops must leave Belgium and France. Wilson would deal only with civilian leaders. While Germany considered Wilson’s demands the German kaiser Wilhelm II was forced to give up his throne and the new leaders quickly agreed to Wilson’s terms. The armistice began on November 11, 1918.
