6 THEME

7 Definition of Theme It’s what the story reveals about people and life.
A discovery of a truth about our own existence. Theme is what a story is REALLY about. It is the meaning or lesson you take away from the story.

8 To help you identify the theme of a story:
How has the main character changed over the course of the story? What has the main character discovered? Which scenes are important? What ideas about life do they suggest? What is the story’s title?

9 Possible Themes Friendship Loyalty Courage Loneliness The Power of One
Family Responsibility

10 Possible Themes for these stories:
Rikki-Tikki-Tavi Monsters are Due on Maple Street A Single Shard I, Juan de Pareja

11 Thesis Statement

12 Thesis Statement Thesis is a fancy word for CLAIM. (What you are claiming to be true!) The last sentence in the introduction paragraph. Includes the name of the book, the author, and clearly answers the prompt. Acts as the “table of contents” of the essay. (Tells what the essay is about and what order things will be explained.)

13 A Single Shard Essay Courage is an important theme in A Single Shard. For example, Min’s wife, Ajima, shows courage when she begins to provide food and clothing for Tree-ear even though she still may be grieving for her dead son, and it could anger her husband. Other characters show equal courage throughout the story. PROMPT: Use textual evidence to support a claim that explains how Tree-ear, Crane-man, and/or Min show courage throughout the story.

15 Example Intro for Monsters
Prompt: In the teleplay, The Monsters are Due on Maple Street, how does fear effect Charlie? Fear is a powerful emotion. It can make people do things that they would not normally do. In “Monsters Are Due on Maple Street”, by Rod Serling, fear causes Charlie to behave in an irrational way.

16 Sample Intro Rikki Prompt: In the story, Rikki-Tikki Tavi, what does Rikki prove about heroism? Anyone can be a hero. A hero doesn’t have to be big, strong, and powerful. In “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” by Rudyard Kipling, Rikki proves that heroes can come in very small packages.

17 Body Paragraphs

18 How much Evidence & Explanation
You need more Explanation in a Response to Literature essay. 1 Piece of Evidence : 2+ Analysis/Explanation 1 chunk = 1 scene Each body paragraph will have 2 chunks.

19

20 Body Paragraph #1 Explains the first part of the thesis (your answer to the prompt) Use two difference pieces of evidence, and then explain how that evidence proves your point. It is OK to paraphrase, as long as you include the page number or chapter that something occurred. Explain your evidence in the order it happened in the story. Don’t forget CONTEXT.

21 Body Paragraph #2 Explains the first part of the thesis (your answer to the prompt) Same expectations as body paragraph #1.

22 Let’s Look at some examples!
- What is the theme? - What is the thesis? - Does the thesis CLEARLY answer the prompt? - Does the topic sentence of the body paragraph explain what the paragraph is about? -Does the evidence go in order of the story? - Is there CONTEXT to help you understand what the writer is explaining?

23 Conclusion
