Theme is what a story is REALLY about.

Thesis is a fancy word for CLAIM. (What you are claiming to be true!)
The last sentence in the introduction paragraph.
Includes the name of the book, the author, and clearly answers the prompt.
Acts as the “table of contents” of the essay. (Tells what the essay is about and what order things will be explained.)

13. A Single Shard Essay
Courage is an important theme in A Single Shard. For example, Min’s wife, Ajima, shows courage when she begins to provide food and clothing for Tree-ear even though she still may be grieving for her dead son, and it could anger her husband. Other characters show equal courage throughout the story.
PROMPT:
Use textual evidence to support a claim that explains how Tree-ear, Crane-man, and/or Min show courage throughout the story.

Prompt: In the teleplay, The Monsters are Due on Maple Street, how does fear effect Charlie? Fear is a powerful emotion. It can make people do things that they would not normally do. In “Monsters Are Due on Maple Street”, by Rod Serling, fear causes Charlie to behave in an irrational way.

Anyone can be a hero. A hero doesn’t have to be big, strong, and powerful. In “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” by Rudyard Kipling, Rikki proves that heroes can come in very small packages.
