Module 6 Teaching Expectations and Guidelines for Success

2 Session Objectives Begin communicating and teaching behavior expectations on the first day of school Develop a calendar/schedule for teaching behavior the first two weeks of school Develop a procedure for teaching new students when they enter your campus Continue reminding, re-teaching and recognizing expected behavior throughout the school year Use data to determine when “booster” lessons may be necessary

3 Steps To Teaching Procedures………….
Praise Praise and Give extra Encouragement to Those who need it. Review Review the procedure and provide feedback daily. Practice Practice the procedure Together. Make adjustments immediately. Model Model by showing the students how the procedure is done. Teach Teach the procedure by stating the idea or procedure clearly. Conduct periodic review of classroom routines and revise them as needed University High School-Waco ISD

5 Considerations Social and academic teaching must be integrated within and across the curriculum Behaviors must be taught directly and students need examples and reminders to perform throughout the day Students who misbehave regularly will need additional instruction

6 Teaching Expected Behavior
Use multiple examples, both positive and negative Teach in the setting(s) where you want it to happen Provide frequent positive practice with useful corrections Acknowledge and reinforce expected behavior Teach it the same way you would academic content

7 Teach Behavior Skills in a Variety of Ways
Positive and Non-example Handout Cheers Music Role play Skits Positive practice in the actual areas Creative and engaging lessons

9 Staff should come up with a collective rubric that defines what the expected behaviors look and sound like. Give out example from Sprick materials.

13 Activity: “Booster Sessions”
Review the data, specifically for “peaks’ and “valleys” “If this were your campus, when (during the fall) would you think it logical to revisit your school-wide expectations?” Discuss as a group. Report out. Repeat activity for the “spring” timeframe. Emphasize with teams that the goal is to revisit the school-wide expectations at least 20 times each year.

Review samples of lesson plans Determine the actions needed in order to get the lesson plans written, distributed, scheduled, and taught at the beginning and throughout the year. Who will be responsible for teaching? Develop a schedule for teaching and re-teaching “Guidelines for Success, rules, and behavior expectations Develop a plan for teaching students who enter your campus after the beginning of the year
