Ivan the Terrible (1533) first czar, fights nobles for control, kills ‘traitors’ Peter the Great (1696) modernized/’westernized’ Russia Catherine the Great (1762) conquered much of Europe, added 25% land to Russia Alexander I ~ not in book… Nicholas I (1850s) loved autocracy Alexander II more reform minded / but assassinated / freed 20 million serfs same day as Lincoln signed Emancipation Proclamation. Alexander III (1881) loved autocracy, very harsh, pogroms, ‘not a nice guy’ Nicholas II (Alexandra and Kids) (1894) Grigory Rasputin??
