2.3 Finding and obtaining materials
Visiting Bring your student ID Obey rules/manners of place of the visit Letters of introduction sometimes is needed (Interlibrary Loan Desk) Previous inquiry is needed sometimes, apply at least one week before you visit Making ILL order Order at your departmental library or Central Library ★Guidance points: Not so many people are familiar with ILL service When ordering books/copies from almost all Japanese Universities, NUL bears a part of the charge of them Copy: full payment Loan: one way cost ILL service may take some time. Order books/copies with time to spare ・Besides university libraries general books may be in public libraries, as Nagoya City Library or Aichi Prefectural Library. If you are NU student you can make User Card. If you need to visit other libraries, sometimes inquiry in advance is needed (particularly private university libraries or when you want to look at rare materials). ・In other libraries you can order a book or the copy. Please tell new students that a part of sending expenses is covered by NUL. ©2018 Nagoya University Library

3. Additional details for the guidance
The period of First Year Seminar A Academic writing process Suitable resources Deciding a topic Thinking of keywords Decide what book to read Searching for articles Decide what article to read <3. (slide 30-41): 8min> ©2018 Nagoya University Library
31
3.1 Academic writing process
At what stages of thesis writing materials are needed? When you are given a task When deciding on the topic When making an argument Complete article 5 stage 4 Write introduction stage 3 stage Create an outline of article 2 Task is given! stage Create an argument 1 Get evidence materials Graph shows stages to complete an essay and a research paper When you decided on the topic you needed to know basic things and concept about given task. In order to further improve a discussion, reinforce your thinking, to be able to persuade your opponent you need to decide your argument. Each stage is different, therefore objectives of materials used on each stage and types of materials are different. stage Study previous research Deciding a topic Develop a discussion Acquire basic knowledge Know outline 31 ©2018 Nagoya University Library
32
©2018 Nagoya University Library
3.2 Suitable resources Steps Materials ★Guidance points: (Common patterns) Making conclusions by only using Wikipedia Unknowingly searching by narrow keywords Books are not found Found articles are too difficult to understand Without knowing the outline reading the treatise ↓ Advise them to start with introductory books Internet・Newspapers・Encyclopedias Get basic knowledge Know outline Decide topic Develop discussion Get evidence General information・introductory textbooks Specialized literature, research paper, statistical data, etc. <No need to explain on library use orientation, but during seminars give support if needed> When searching for materials there are materials which you should look at each stage – study or research. When you are given a task to write a thesis or essay, there is an order – first, know the outline, improve understanding, develop discussion, summarize and present. Since some users prefer to use information from the internet, introduce about searching for materials by comparing them. To know about the task use dictionaries handbooks. To get basic knowledge. Next, to know the outline find and read introductory books. Then refine your topic and read more specialized books and research papers. And to develop discussion in some cases you need statistical data. When deciding topic and search for detailed keywords some times no result or search result include highly specialized difficult to understand materials. Therefore give advice to search for general words and introductory books. ©2018 Nagoya University Library
33
©2018 Nagoya University Library
3.3 Deciding a topic Write down related words Think about question <Make a question using these words Who/What/When/Where/Why/How> Refine angle, view, period, subject, method, and so on ★Guiding points: Refine the size of the topic to reportable If cannot study well, change direction later Look at related keywords and decide field, view, angle to investigate and decide specific topic. While grasping the summary, broad keywords such as seminar topic would be fine. But while progressing in your study, you should decide your direction. ©2018 Nagoya University Library
34
©2018 Nagoya University Library
3.4 Thinking of keywords The keywords for searching materials Think as many words as you can Broader/narrower concept, synonyms, related words, different notations Combination of words / narrowing down Broader Technology Social Psychology Electrical engineering Communication ★Guidance points: OPAC and databases do not search synonyms automatically as Google does You should try entering different keywords by yourself Find new keywords from search results Correspondence mobile, mobile phone (terminal) Use keywords which are on your mind, to search for books and articles. When few results returned or non-related materials appear in search results, use different keywords to search. Search with words with different writings, different words with similar meanings or combination of different keyword. In Google, synonyms or endings of English words automatically change, however in OPAC you need to modify own keywords to make search. Reconsider and get habit - when you searched and no results returned, it does not mean that material is not available, try use different words. cellular phone Smartphone Feature phone iPhone Android Narrower ©2018 Nagoya University Library
35
©2018 Nagoya University Library
3.5 Decide what book to read To evaluate a book For reference materials for report reliable information is required Does the book match your topic or step of research? Reading for the purpose Read only what is important to your purpose - “Skimming” Search a clue for investigation - “Scanning” Read critically, thoroughly - “Critical Reading” ★Guidance points: Do not stick to the book you saw for the first time, compare with others. Try to look at other books located near Old looking book may be is ”used often regular item” Check why the book you have found is good Read critically Why is important to chose? You are not going to read all found books. In limited time you can read only a particular number of books that fit the stage of your research. ©2018 Nagoya University Library
36
©2018 Nagoya University Library
3.5 Decide what book to read Evaluation points Publication year: Choose the newer one Author: Is he/she a researcher in this field? Edition: Updated editions Colophon (publication data) Check objective and assumed readers (e.g. “For undergraduate students…” ) Preface Grasp outline Search for required topics Table of Contents Search for required topic Check keywords (further clues) Index References to be read next and to know basic references References Highly Cited Used by many Others To recognize what the book is about, there are some evaluation points to check. A “colophon” is the page where publication data are written, such as publication year or author, in the first part. Read the preface and it may have descriptions about objective and assumed readers. It also could be a clue if the author mentions a purpose of this book. Check the table of contents which may have the chapter suitable for your research. It is important to check whether it has index or not. ©2018 Nagoya University Library
37
3.6 Searching for articles
Database Japanese / foreign articles Discipline Newspaper articles ・・・ If you need, you can use the list of the databases ★Guidance points: If necessary show how to search articles If you need more specialized resources than books There are few books on your topic …and so on (You can actually demonstrate database list or database) New students may not need to search for articles straight away. But teach them how to be able to search articles in database ・when you need to search for articles ・when you cannot find specialized books on your topic ©2018 Nagoya University Library
38
3.6 Searching for articles
Web of Science Searching for articles around the world Click ‘NULink’ icon to check availability of the article in Nagoya University. ★Guidance points: NULink solves the problem of finding content, especially full text (electronic or printed version). Do not stick only on first search results. Try to search several times Web of Science (WoS) is one of the largest databases. It covers all fields. WoS records include citation information. Therefore, ・you can find articles cited by or citing the article you select. ・you can find highly cited = high-impact articles. <For more information about WoS, refer “Guide sheet 3-5” and “Guide sheet 3-6”.> ©2018 Nagoya University Library
39
3.6 Searching for articles
★Guidance points: General explanatory article about academic topics: theory/application of technology influence on society/economy The effective source for topical themes <Restriction of simultaneous access. Please make sure to log out within proper time> Newspaper articles Finding the newest topics Reading commentaries Database LexisNexis Academic ProQuest Central Refer to: Search > Databases> Newspapers Newspaper articles are not academic papers, but latest news topics can be useful on seminar. How theory and science are applied to real life? In which way they affect it. Those pieces of information can be useful. ©2018 Nagoya University Library
40
- Reviewing the Search Results -
Searching OPAC or other databases … Few or no results Too many/specific keywords Misspellings/different notations Too many result Too few/broad/general keywords ★Guidance points: Pay attention not only on operation of search but also check how appropriate are the results No results don’t mean no materials. Don’t give up and try to search several times Search by more general (broad) keywords OR search Check helps or input examples Important things to keep in mind when searching for books and articles: Many new students get used to internet search, and think that they are good at searching. Do not give up when no results returned after first search, change keyword and try again. There are many conversion mistakes or misspellings, difference in katakana notations. When you enter seminar topic or your own topic as it is, it may be too detailed and no books will be found. To search by more general or more specific keywords Nippon Decimal Classification can be useful. Search by more specific (narrow) keywords Add keywords Limit search by date etc. ©2018 Nagoya University Library
41
3.7 Decide what article to read
Evaluation points Year: Newer (excl.: classics, basic) Journal, author:reputation in the field Bibliographic information Grasp the content of the outline Abstract Look for required topic Check for terminology (clues for next inquiry) Keywords No references → It is not academic article Search for reference to read next References Mentioned, cited by many people <Highly cited> Citation To recognize what the article is about, there are some evaluation points to check. Looking over bibliographic information, an abstract and keywords will tell what the article is about. You can use citation chaining to find more useful resources. *backwards chaining *towards chaining Logic, neutrality, diversity, scientific basis Popularity of topic, uniqueness of view Body of article
