Organic Macromolecules
Large (macro) molecules that are found in all living organisms Organic – any molecule that has carbon atoms AND hydrogen atoms 4 major classes: 1. Carbohydrates Lipids 3. Proteins Nucleic Acids Usually large molecules made of many atoms Examples of Organic Macromolecules: - DNA (Nucleic Acid) Oils (Fats) - Glucose (a sugar= Carbohydrate) Enzymes (Proteins)
2
Inorganic Molecules Any molecule that is NOT carbon based with hydrogen atoms It may contain carbon OR hydrogen, but NOT C and H together. Some other elements found in inorganic molecules include: - Nitrogen (N) Sulfur (S) - Oxygen (O) Chlorine (Cl) - Potassium (K) Sodium (Na) Examples of Inorganic Molecules: - Water (H2O) Ammonia (NH3) - Nitrogen Gas (N2) Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
