4th Grade News 3rd Six Weeks Math Science Reading Writing
During the 3rd six weeks we will be focusing on division. We will learn how to divide with the standard algorithm for long division. We will also learn to divide with estimation, mental math and the partial quotient method. We have two programs that your child can work on to help them review concepts we have covered this year. They are Moby Max and Think Through Math (Imagine Math). In Moby Max they can work on fact fluency, which will help them with long division. Occasionally unfinished class work is assigned as homework. Science For the third six weeks, we will be continuing our exploration of electrical energy by investigating how electrical charges flow in a circuit. Then, we will explore how to make an electromagnet by passing an electric current through a coiled wire.. Please continue to encourage your child to study their weekly science vocabulary, so they will be successful on the vocabulary quizzes on Fridays. Texas History Throughout the third six weeks we will continue our journey through Texas History by learning the reasons Europeans explored and settled the Western Hemisphere. We will be learning the economic motivations of European explorers and explain the impact of these explorations on Texas. We will also learn the accomplishments of these Spanish explorers such as Alonso Alvarez de Pineda, Cabeza de Vaca, Francisco Coronado, Juan de Onate and French explorer Rene Robert La Salle. We will discuss the mistakes made by these explorers and the impact these mistakes had on Texas. Please continue to encourage your child to study for their weekly vocabulary quizzes. Reading The third six weeks is all about nonfiction. We will be reading informational books to learn new facts and about different events in history. We will continue to meet in reading groups everyday to read our guided reading books. I will be sending home a 4th grade level book that your child needs to practice reading at home every night. They will have a comprehension quiz over their book every Friday. Our class will continue to go to the library every Tuesday. Writing In writing, we will continue with editing texts for correct spelling, and sentence construction. In our own expository writing, will build upon introduction paragraphs by learning how to describe and explain a main idea. The first writing will be about our two favorite candies. Please encourage students to continue working at home at to build their language skills, and also study for spelling tests each Friday. Occasionally if students do not finish work in class, they will be assigned homework. Thank you!
