4. Mission Statement მისია
The National English Spelling Competition (NESC) Georgia’s mission is to support and enhance the educational experience of pupils and teachers in Georgia.
Two tiers:
Grades 8 and 9
Grades 10-12

5. Competition Overview & Dates კონკურსის მიმოხილვა და თარიღები
NESC-GE consists of three rounds of competition:
Local Round: Oct. 24–30, in local schools throughout Georgia
Regional Round: Dec. 17, in regional city centers (e.g., Kutaisi, Batumi, Telavi, etc.)
National Round: March 24–27, in Tbilisi

Make sure teachers know they can hold the competition on any days between October 26 and November 1. RCs have until November 13 to send all of the local round information to Competition Managers. It is suggested that you tell teachers to send you information sooner as you will likely have to follow up with them to gather information (in other words, teachers will not fill out their forms correctly or completely).

Local Round
Each word is spoken by a teacher and/or a volunteer in the following order: English (wait 5 seconds), native language (Georgian) (wait 5 seconds), English (wait 5 seconds), English (wait 5 seconds).
Example: Clever, ჭკვიანი, Clever, Clever.
Repeat this process until all test words have been said.

მასწავლებელი ან(და) მოხალისე წარმოთქვამს სიტყვას შემდეგი წესით: თავდაპირველად ინგლისურად, 5 წამის შემდეგ გაიმეორებს მის ქართულ დეფინიციას, ინგლისურად და 5 წამის შემდეგ ისევ ინგლისურ ენაზე.

This where you add information verbally about the following: # of test words for each tier (25 for 8-9, 30 for 10-12); what happens if students aren’t done writing after a word has been said in English for the third time and the eight seconds of down time have passed; and so on. You all have a solid idea of how the local round works.

Tie-Breaker Round
Please do not tell this to your pupils in advance! They should not know about this before the competition!
All pupils who participate in the Local Round must complete the Tie-Breaker Round. Give this part of the test to all of the pupils immediately after you finish the regular part of the test.

How the Tie-Breaker Round Works
Explain to the pupils how the Tie-Breaker Round works, and that it is used to break any potential ties between them.
Read the definition of a word, followed by four possible word answers. Repeat this process a second time. Read the definitions and words slowly, with short pauses between possible answers.
Pupils can write down either the number of their answer (1, 2, 3, or 4), or the word. They do not have to spell the word correctly.

აუხსენით მოსწავლეებს თუ რატომ და როგორ ატარებთ ამ რაუნდს, რათა მათ შორის გამოვლინდეს საუკეთესო.

Tie-Breaker Round
If three or more pupils from the same tier are tied for the highest score after you grade their tests, then you must use the Tie-Breaker Round results to determine which two pupils from a particular tier will advance to the Regional Round.
Using the Tie Breaker scores will not be necessary if only two pupils from a particular tier have the same highest score.

თუ სამი ან მეტი მოსწავლე ერთი და იმავე ასაკობრივი ჯგუფიდან მიიღებს უმაღლეს მსგავს ქულებს, მაშინ უნდა ჩაატაროთ ეს რაუნდი, რათა გამოიკვეთოს ორი რჩეული რეგიონულ რაუნდში საასპარეზოდ.

11. Submission of Local Round Forms ადგილობრივი რაუნდის ფორმების ჩაბარება
Pupil Test Forms and Score Report Forms must be submitted electronically to your Regional or Assistant Regional Coordinator.
The forms will be available on the NESC-GE website under the “How It Works” tab. Please check the website weekly for further updates and instructions.
You should also receive the forms via from your Regional Coordinator.
მოსწავლის ტესტები და ქულათა ანგარიშის ფორმები უნდა იყოს ჩაბარებული ელექტრონულად რეგიონულ კოორდინატორთან ან მის ასისტენტთან.

Go over the difference between the two forms, how to use them, etc. Teachers will receive the forms with the local round test words. They should send you their students’ test forms and Score Report Forms as soon as their competition is complete. Ask them to send in scanned copies--if they cannot, a picture is fine. But we want to minimize the amount of pictures we have sent in.

Regional Round
The Regional Round has two stages:
First Stage:
The first stage is a written exam exactly like the Local Round.
Written exams will be graded after the completion of the first stage, and the top 15% of pupils from each tier will advance to the second stage.

რეგიონული რაუნდი შედგება ეტაპისგან:
პირველი ეტაპი:
პირველი ეტაპი შედგება წერითი ნაწილისგან და არის ადგილობრივი რაუნდის ანალოგი.

მეორე ეტაპი:
მეორე ეტაპი არის ვერბალური/ზეპირი.
მოსწავლეებს მოეთხოვებათ:
წარმოთქვან სიტყვა ინგლისურად
სათითაო ასო დამარცვლონ ინგლისურად
ისევ წარმოთქვან მთლიანი სიტყვა ინგლისურად.
თუ რეგიონული რაუნდის მეორე ნაწილი 2 საათზე მეტხანს გაგრძელდა ან ამოიწურა სიტყვები სიიდან, ტესტის ადმინისტრატორებმა უნდა გამოიყენონ სიტყვათა საიდუმლო სია, რათა გამოვლინდეს გამარჯვებული თითოეული ასაკობრივი ჯგუფიდან.
Regional Round
Second Stage:
The second stage is done verbally.
Pupils will be required to:
Say the word in English
Spell out the word in English, letter by letter
Say the word in English again
If the spoken portion of the Regional Round exceeds two hours or completes the given list of words, the test administrators will use a secret list of words to determine the
winners of each tier.
The secret list will start out with very simple words and get progressively more difficult. However the words from that list with not appear on any of the given word lists that students have studied.

Regional Round
Second Stage (continued):
Example: Facilitator says, “The word is ruin.” Pupil answers, “ruin. r-u-i-n. ruin.”
Pupils may start from the beginning of a word twice if they think they have made a mistake. They must say something like, “I would like to start over,” or “Can I start again?”
One strike is given if a word is spelled incorrectly. Two strikes result in elimination from the competition.

There is no one phrase a student must say to start a word over, so long as the sentiment that the students desires to start over is explicit and clear. After a request to start over has been made, the student then starts by saying the word before spelling it.

15. NESC Disqualifiers დისკვალიფიკაცია
No Cheating!
No Tardiness!
Not adhering to these rules will result in immediate termination from the competition.

If a student is caught cheating they will be asked to leave. If a student is tardy, they will not be allowed to participate.

16. NESC Disqualifiers (cont.) დისკვალიფიკაცია (გაგრძელება)
No Talking!
“No Talking” will be enforced through a strike system.
Local and Written Regional Rounds
Pupils will receive tallies on the top of their tests each time they speak. Each tally is a strike. If a pupil receives two strikes, that pupil is eliminated from the competition. If a pupil has one strike, that strike will count as one wrong
answer.

Students will be allowed to finish the written portion of their test even if they receive two or more strikes. However, that student’s test will not be graded.

17. NESC Disqualifiers (cont.) დისკვალიფიკაცია (გაგრძელება)
Examples:
A grade 10 pupil spelled all 30 words correctly, but received one strike for talking. The final score is lowered to 29.
Another pupil, in grade 11, also spelled all 30 words correctly, but received two strikes for talking, so he/she was eliminated from the competition.

მე-10 კლასელმა მოსწავლემ დამარცვლა 30 სიტყვა სწორად, მაგრამ მიიღო 1 გაფრთხილება საუბრისთვის, ეს მის ქულათა ჯამს შეამცირებს, შესაბამისად მას ექნება 29 ქულა.

Details regarding the regional competition will be given to those qualify for it.

18. Teachers’ Duties მასწავლებელთა როლები
გაავრცელეთ ინფორმაცია კონკურსის შესახებ თქვენი სკოლაში მოსწავლეებთან.

1. Advertise the competition to your pupils.
2. Hand out the Word Lists to pupils as soon as the Lists are released.
3. Help pupils practice for the Local Round.
4. Administer the Local Round by saying test words and monitoring tests.
5. Grade the tests and submit the results to your Regional or Assistant Regional Coordinator.
6. Help pupils practice for the Regional Round.

20. Word Lists სიტყვათა შერჩევა
The Local Round Word List will consist of words, depending on the tier (8-9 fewer than 10-12).
The Local and Regional Round written tests will be 25 (8-9) or 35 (10-12) words.
The Regional Round Word List will consist of words.
The National Round Word List will
consist of 2500 words.
ადგილობრივი რაუნდის სიტყვათა სია შედგება 100- დან- 120-მდე სიტყვისაგან (მე ნაკლები ვუდრე მე ).

There will be a different amount for each tier. The 8th and 9th graders will have less words to study and will be tested on less than the 10th-12th graders.

It will be helpful if you bring paper and pens for the written practice and Xs for the spoken competition practice.
