1 Biology Bio=life Logos=study
So, Biology is the study (Science) of life.

2 Characteristics of Life
List the 8 on p. 15. Is a fire alive? Why or why not? Biotic=living Abiotic=never living

3 Living or Nonliving Tree with no leaves on it in the winter
Glass of water Sun Fire Wind Rock Computer Table Dog Pumpkin seeds Turtle shell Cut hair Chicken sandwich Rubber band

4 Observation=uses one or more senses such as sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. These are facts.
2 types: 1. Quantitative-involves numbers ex.- there are 30 students in this class 2. Qualitative-description ex.- you have brown hair, white shoes, glasses

5 Quantitative or Qualitative?
10 of you have black hair. Many of you have on tennis shoes. I smell bread baking. The tree is yellow, red, and orange. I have 1 dog. I hear the train coming.

6 Inference=a logical explanation based on your prior experiences and understanding. They are guesses and may not always be correct.

7 What is bias? An unfair preference for or dislike of something.
Just one view point Ex.- what is your favorite ice cream? Plain vanilla or delicious chocolate? Why is this a biased question?

8 When graphing Independent variable (what you tested) is on the X axis (horizontal) with evenly numbered scale. Dependent variable (data measured or collected) is on the Y axis (vertical) and ALWAYS has units! All data is labeled using correct SI units All graphs have a detailed title A key is used to describe how much each line represents. Use as much of the graph as possible.

9 Types of graphs Line-use for changes over time.
Bar-use to compare amounts between groups. Pie chart-use to show percentages/parts of a whole. Scatter plot-use for showing relationships between IV and DV when points don’t form a line.

10 Measurements-use the SI system (international system of measurements)
Mass-triple beam balance, units-gram Volume-graduated cylinder, beaker, or L x W x H, units-mL for liquids Length- metric ruler, units-cm Temperature-use Celsius

11 Metric system KHDMDCM (Kangaroos hop down mountains drinking chocolate milk) So, 1 meter = 100 cm (move 2 places to the right). 1 meter=1000 mm (move 3 places to the right)
