1 Louis Jean Pasteur Nouran Walid Azzam Grade 9C October 24, 2015

2 Quick Facts Born: December 27, 1822 in Dole, France Died: September 28, 1895 in Marnes-a-la-Coquette, France Where he studied: College d’Arbois (elementary), Institution Barbet (high school), and École Normale Supérieure (college/got Ph. D. in 1849) Family Spouse: Marie Pasteur (married in 1949) Children: Jean Baptiste Pasteur, Camile Pasteur, Cecile Pasteur, Marie Louise Pasteur, and Jeanne Pasteur

3 Why is Pasteur Famous? Louis Pasteur is famous for his work in microbiology and chemistry. He made many important discoveries related to the immune system, vaccines, and diseases. He was able to discover the causes of diseases and how to prevent them. He discovered that diseases are caused by germs; they aren’t spontaneously generated as was thought back in his time. Pasteur is also famous for developing a process that kills germs and purifies food, known as pasteurization; which, unlike sterilization, doesn’t affect the quality or taste of the food. Furthermore, he is famous for developing important vaccinations for anthrax; rabies; cholera; and tuberculosis. Other than microbiology, Pasteur is well-known in the field of chemistry. He is famous for explaining why certain crystals are not symmetric by using molecular studies.

4 Where Did He Work? Professor of Chemistry at the University of Strasbourg ( ) Professor of Chemisty at the University of Lille ( ) Director of Scientific Studies at the École Normale (Starting from 1857)

5 Historical Events of His Time
Pasteur lived during a critical period in the history of France. Pasteur was born in the same year that Napoleon Bonaparte died. France was trying to recover from years of war and political unrest due to the French Revolution. France was looking for stability and for rebuilding itself. The good thing, however, was that France had a very strong educational system. It had great schools and colleges plus many brilliant scientists like Biot, Savart, Ampere, and Laplace. Thus, Pasteur came at a critical turning point in France’s history, and was very fortunate to have these talented scientists and well-established institutions around him.

6 His Society and Environment
Pasteur lived during the golden age of French science. He interacted directly with great scientists like Claude Bernard and Biot. He had direct contact with Emperor Napoleon III who invited him to the Royal Palace of Compiegne. The Emperor asked Pasteur to investigate wine and its diseases.

7 People He Worked With He collaborated with the famous scientist, Biot. They worked for several years at Biot’s laboratory at the College de France. Awards He Received The Prize of the French Pharmaceutical Society Rumford Medal of the London Royal Society The Prize for Experimental Physiology by Academie des Sciences

8 Accomplishments! Strengthening the case for the Germ Theory
Developing very important vaccinations Inventing the process of pasteurization Discovering that bacteria cause sourness in some drinks (beer, wine) Discovering that fermentation is by microorganisms Studying the structure of crystals Pasteur studying a rabbit’s spinal cord with rabies

9 Quotes by Pasteur Musée Pasteur
“When I approach a child, he inspires in me two sentiments; tenderness for what he is, and respect for what he may be.” “Science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the torch which illuminates the world.” Musée Pasteur There’s a museum in Paris, France named after Pasteur, displaying all his work and discoveries.
