Lesson 5.1.7 Culminating Lesson
Earth System Journal Lesson 5.1.7 Culminating Lesson
2
Sometimes I wonder… Questions for the class…
Where can we go on the school grounds to make observations of nature? When we are making observations should we talk to others? Should we take our Science Notebooks or will the paper and pencil take our attention away from the observations? Should we set some ground rules before we go? Have students read through the questions out loud to the class.
3
Ground Rules Sit without talking
Do not look or play with any other students for 10 minutes Use your five senses to make observations Try to see connections between the spheres that you can later write about Remember your observations to share with others Have students read through the ground rules out loud to the class.
4
Observing The Earth System
Go out for 10 minute observation Return to class for whole class discussion
5
Class Discussion Discussion questions:
What Earth system science observation did you make? What clues or evidence do you see to support your observation? In the natural world, what evidence can you find of the interconnections of the spheres? What questions do you have based on your observations? Conduct a classroom discussion and record ideas on the board.
6
Science notebooks or journals: student examples
Introduce using science notebooks or science journals to the class.
7
Here are more examples of science notebooks.
This student made diagrams with explanations and labels.
8
We will be making our own Earth System Science Journal
Remember to: Use your keen observation skills Discuss your observations with your family and friends Act as an Earth system scientist would act Think about the connections between the spheres Ask for help if you are confused Look back to your science notebook for ideas and background information Make the EES Journal attractive by using color and doing quality work Have students read through the statements out loud to the class.
9
Earth System Journal For this lesson you will be making an Earth system journal for three days. The journal should include: observations pictures or diagrams color or highlights an ESS question each day a journal format will be provided you also may do this without the format and use your creativity There is a rubric on the last page for grading purposes Have students read through the statements out loud to the class.
10
Earth System Journal for you to record your keen observations in.
This is the format for the ESS Journal.
11
Design and Plan a Science Experiment
You will have a chance to design a and plan an Earth system science experiment. You will have the following sections: Observation Question - Based on keen observation Background research - use your science notebook and the internet Claim - “If I do ________, then I think ________ will happen.” Materials and science tools Experiment plan - change only one variable if possible Discorveries - what do you think your experiment might show? This is the science experiment plan the students are to follow. This slide may be revisited later in the week.
12
Time to begin our ESS Journal
Use your keen observation skills Discuss your observations with your family and friends Act as an Earth system scientist would act Think about the connections between the spheres Ask for help if you are confused Look back to your science notebook for ideas and background information Make the EES Journal attractive by using color and doing quality work Good Luck! If you choose to have students work in pairs or collaborative groups this is the time to make groups and pass out the journals.
