Background The workshop is an activity of the first pillar of the ten tranche of the Development Account programme of statistics and data (DA10) The objective of the DA10 ( ) is to strengthen statistical capacity of countries to measure, monitor and report on the sustainable development goals in an accurate, reliable and timely manner for evidence-based policymaking Pillar 1, means of implementation, is a cross-cutting pillar with the objective to enhance the capacity of countries to strengthen statistical institutional environments and production processes across multiple statistical domains to measure, monitor and report on the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda

DA10 pillar 1 activities conducted so far
Kick-off workshop (Cape Town, South Africa, 19 to 20 January 2017) reflected on the preparation of national indicator framework and on the roadmaps for the development of a clear set of strategies to strengthen national statistical systems and their deliveries in line with the Global Action Plan Regional workshop on sound institutional environment, cooperation, dialogue and partnerships for the production and utilization of SDG indicators (Libreville, Gabon, 14 to 16 June 2017) Regional workshops on data disaggregation (Lilongwe, Malawi, 27 to 29 September 2017 and Victoria, Seychelles, October 2017) Regional workshops on the integration of administrative data, big data and geospatial information for the compilation of SDG indicators (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, April 2018 and Lomé, Togo, May 2018)

Regional workshops on the integration of administrative data, big data and geospatial information for the compilation of SDG indicators (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, April 2018 and Lomé, Togo, May 2018) In target countries (Gabon, Malawi, Madagascar, Mauritania, Seychelles, Sudan and Togo): Assessment of the institutional statistical environment and production processes national workshops (Gabon, Malawi, Mauritania, Seychelles, Sudan and Togo) to discuss the findings from the assessment and to support the establishment of specific roadmaps for strengthening statistical institutional environment to measure, monitor and report on the sustainable development goals Support provided to Benin in the transformation and modernization of the National Statistical System (drafting of the new statistics law and related regulations, the NSDS 3 and organization of the NSS)

Next activities National workshop to discuss the findings from the assessment of the institutional statistical environment and production processes in Madagascar (before the end of 2018) Regional workshop on data and metadata sharing and exchange for French- speaking African countries (first semester of 2019) Closing workshop (end of 2019)

Objectives of the workshop on data and metadata sharing and exchange
To review and discuss requirements for the development of common data repositories across national statistical systems and the use of innovative software and tools for data and metadata sharing and exchange in support of the reporting, dissemination, and utilization of SDG Indicators To address and discuss how to mainstream statistical data and metadata storage and exchange through the adoption of open standards and technologies such as SDMX

Expected Outcomes To raise awareness among countries on the advantages of using common data and metadata portals and open standards and technologies for exchanging and reporting data and metadata in the framework of SDG indicators To raise awareness of tools available to support data and metadata exchange using the SDMX standard, and how these can be used to facilitate the exchange of SDG indicators To review the Principles of SDG Indicator Reporting and Dissemination Platforms and guidelines for their application in the context of data sharing and exchange
