SOVIET UNION AFTER WW II UNTIL THE EARLY 1990s.

and end the world. Both sides had developed Nuclear weapons & were now stockpiling them.

SOVIET GOALS -Spread Communism -Use Eastern Europe as a “buffer”
-Influence Third World nations before the U.S. did. (A.K.A. developing nations) -Show the world that they were superior to the U.S.

U.S. GOALS -Contain the spread of Communism -Rebuild Western Europe
-Spread Democracy & Capitalism -Contain the spread of Communism -Rebuild Western Europe -Influence Third World nations before the Soviets did. -Show the world that we were superior to the Soviet Union.

IRON CURTAIN This was the phrase Winston
Churchill used in 1946 to describe the division between Democratic Western Europe & Communist Eastern Europe.

NATO The military alliance between the U.S., Canada,
and Western Europe.

WARSAW PACT The military alliance between
the Soviets and Eastern Europe. The Soviets would tell these “satellite” nations what they could & couldn’t do.

KOREA: NORTH (C) & SOUTH (D) VIETNAM: NORTH (C) & SOUTH (D)

BRINKMANSHIP THE TACTIC OF GOING TO THE “BRINK” OF WAR IN ORDER TO TRY TO MAKE THE OTHER SIDE BACK DOWN.

MAD MUTUAL ASSURED DESTRUCTION THE IDEA THAT BOTH NATIONS
WOULD DESTROY EACH OTHER IF THEY USED NUCLEAR WEAPONS.
