1920s: CLASH IN VALUES 1.) Describe the clash in values in the 1920s
- There will people called the Fundamentalist and people called the New Morality. They had different beliefs and values. 2.) Provide 3 examples of the New Morality and the Fundamentalists clashing.

New Morality All about living life and personal freedom. Young, energetic, modern. Worked and spent money on music, fashion, and other entertainment Urban (cities is where the action is)

Fundamentalists Did not like the New Morality: thought they were out of control and had no morals. Very Religious: they believed that the Bible was 100% correct and that god created man. Sometimes older generation Lived in rural areas (farms/Midwest)

Prohibition Jan. 16, 1920 = 18th Amendment To enforce the 18th Amendment government passed the Volstead Act -Police Powers = ability to take control of people and property in the interest of public safety. - Secret bars = Speakeasies - Increased crime Bootleggers & the Mob (Al Capone) By 1933 government passed the 21st Amendment Repealed the 18th Am. = liquor was legal again

Disagreement 2: How should women behave? New Morality These new independent women are called flappers Women should vote, work, dance, drink etc. 1920s popular dance the Charleston Fundamentalists Saw these women as sinful, out of control. Women’s place is in the home.

In 1925: Tennessee passed the Butler Act = outlawed teaching evolution or any ideas that were anti-”Bible” theories of how man was created (creationism) John T. Scopes was hired to go into a TN school and teach evolution. Purpose = get arrested and get the story into the media. Today = “separation of church and state”
