Write & Solve Equations
Lesson 15/16
2
Equations Equation: a mathematical sentence stating two quantities are equal Equations must remain balanced to stay true. So.... what you do to one side you MUST do to the other. To solve an equation isolate the variable using the inverse operation. You must show your work to PROVE why your answer is CORRECT! Inverse Operation: opposite operations that undo one another.
3
1-Step Addition & Subtraction Equations
X + 5 = 11 -5 + z = 7 15 = t – 12 4 – j = -2
4
1-Step Multiplication & Division
5
1-Step Equations w/ Rational Numbers
Rational Numbers: integers, fractions, decimals Reciprocal (Multiplicative Inverse): the number flipped To isolate a variable with a fraction coefficient, multiply each side by the reciprocal (flipped fraction)
6
1-Step Equation Practice
7
Order of Operations Simplify within the parentheses
Evaluate the exponents and roots Multiply and divide from left to right Add and subtract from left to right
8
Solve 2-Step Equations To solve an equation use the inverse operation to isolate the variable. To solve a 2-step equation use the inverse order of operations. Sally Ann Does Math Don’t forget...what you do to one side...you MUST do to the other
9
2-Step Examples 7v – 3=25 -10= 8 + 3x -9r + 12= -24 -6 = n/2 -10
10
Write Equations Read the problem carefully until you understand what it is saying. Circle or underline important words or numbers. What do you know? What do you want to know? Select a variable to represent what you want to know. Set the equation equal to the total. Write an equation that symbolizes the information and relationships stated in the problem.
