Photosynthesis
2
What is photosynthesis?
…conversion of light energy into chemical energy.
3
Light + 6 CO2 + 6 H2O C6H12O6 + 6 O2
4
Where does photosynthesis take place?
In the chloroplast Thylakoids - flattened sacs Grana – stack of thylakoids Stroma – fluid around grana
5
2 main steps of photosynthesis
Light reaction – (light dependent reaction) * happens in the thylakoid membrane of chloroplasts * requires 2 types of pigments (chlorophylls) * light energy splits water – H used in glucose and oxygen released * produces NADPH & ATP (energy carriers)
6
2) Calvin cycle (dark reaction or light independent reaction)
* does not DIRECTLY require light * occurs in the stroma * uses energy to link carbons into chains of glucose * produces glucose
7
The process of photosynthesis
Photsynthesis
8
Things to keep in mind: The rate of photosynthesis is affected by several factors: 1) amount of light (intensity and length of exposure) 2) amount of water 3) amount of CO2 4) temperature
9
3-2-1 List 3 structures in the chloroplast that are important to P.S. List 2 stages of P.S. Describe the 1st stage of P.S.
