A few pointers for writing a personal statement
2
Personal Statement: You have 4,000 characters (that is about one side of A4 in 12 pt font size) – characters include spaces (so avoid indenting new paragraphs – it takes up a lot of characters); It is where you tell Admissions Tutors about why you want to study a particular subject at university and why you would make a good student on this type of course; There is no need to repeat information that is already in the form elsewhere, such as your AS grades and GCSEs. Keep it focused on YOU – your interests, your excitement about the course / subject, your skills and abilities, your relevant experiences. You can look at examples of statements by others – but DO NOT be tempted to copy – UCAS uses plagiarism detection software and you will be found out! Be yourself, write as yourself – that is what Admissions Tutors want to see, they don’t want to see the same general clichés about how you have been passionate about x ever since you were a toddler.

Personal Statement - Overview
Opening Paragraph: about why YOU want to study this subject (not a particular course – you are applying to 5 universities / courses – keep it suitable for all 5) Then 2nd Paragraph: what transferable skills / knowledge you have gained from AS studies e.g. team work, working to deadlines, dealing with set- backs, writing essays, analytical thinking, etc. This can include Core Studies, e.g. you may have taken part in some discussions during Ethics for example. 3rd Paragraph: what other skills / experiences you have gained from PT work, work experience, hobbies, volunteering. (There’s still time to start doing stuff now!) 4th paragraph / conclusion: what you are looking forward to about university, if you have particular career in mind with this degree. You can talk about particular aspects of the subject you hope to study, deepen your knowledge of a subject, apply your subject knowledge to real life etc.
