4. What is the purpose of this lesson?
To show respect to ourselves and others, especially your teacher, when a substitute is in your classroom.
To maintain safety in the classroom.
To represent yourself and your school appropriately, giving a good impression of you and Westport Middle School.

Enter the classroom quietly, sit in your assigned seat, and answer correctly when attendance in taken.

Show the substitute teacher the same respect that you show your regular teacher.
If your classmates goof off and treat the substitute disrespectfully, refuse to join in.
Encourage them to be respectful.

Understand that everything is new for the substitute and he or she might not do everything exactly the same as your regular teacher.
Help the substitute to learn the class routines and schedules if asked. Use kind words to let the substitute know the routine.

Cooperate with the substitute teacher and follow their instructions.
If you feel the substitute is being unreasonable or inappropriate, discuss the problem with the principal or another teacher.

Do your work. It is your responsibility to complete work assigned by your teacher, even if your teacher is not there.

Behave the way your regular teacher would expect you to behave, and follow the school rules.
The substitute always leaves notes for the teacher about behavior and work completion and you want to make your teacher proud of you and avoid consequences of negative behavior.

14. Icebreaker: Magic Ball
Students pick up an imaginary ball and mime forming it into an object—a watermelon, a cup, a book, anything— and pretends to carefully hand it to the student to her right.
Her neighbor pretends to carefully take possession of it, then morphs it into something else.
After three students have acted it out, other students can guess what the objects were.

Assemblies at Westport Middle School have a LOT of people.
We have assemblies for Pep Rallies, Speakers, and more!
Since assemblies are attended by so many people- students, staff, parents, and other community members, it is important to learn appropriate behavior to maintain an orderly environment and to ensure everyone’s enjoyment and appreciation.
