THE PROGRESSIVE MOVEMENT
The Progressive Movement was an effort to cure many of the ills of American society that had developed during the great spurt of industrial growth in the last quarter of the 19th century. MUCK RAKERS… Lincoln Steffens William G Sumner Henry George Jacob Riis Jane Addams Upton Sinclair Ida Tarbel Revealed the selfishness and corruption of the government and big businesses. Called Muckrakers because they dug up the dirt on these corrupt organizations.

Lincoln Steffens “The Shame of the Cities” Solutions: Problems:
The muckrakers caused a public uproar. They demanded a non corrupt government. Problems: The government had become intermingled with the business. The concept of laissez fair violated. Example: Corrupt Politicians. Taking alliances with big Businesses.

William G. Sumner “Absurd Effort to Make the World over” Solutions:
Society thought and accepted the idea of not interfering with business. Help the poor rise up. Problems: The wealthy people of society made their money by the downfall of others, the poor. No sympathy for the poor. Example: The rich get richer while the poor get poorer. The poor lived in slums and the ghettos while the rich lived lavish.

Henry George “Progress and Poverty” Solutions: Problems:
There was a better moral condition for the working class. The idea of “let nature take its course” was implied to overcome the idea of business intervention. Problems: Technological advancements caused the labor class lose their jobs. A machine could do the humans job quickly and efficiently. Example: The invention of big machinery in manufacturing. Faster and more reliable then any worker.

Jacob Riis “How the other Half Lives” Solutions: Problems:
Reveal to the world the living conditions through the photos. Make social reform. Improved housing.. Problems: Dirty, disease filled living conditions of the slums. The poor lived in horrible conditions whereas the rich lived in lavish luxuries. Example: Big city slums and ghettos. Rats infested living quarters

Jane Addams “Years at Hull House”” Solutions: Problems:
Settlement houses. Social reform. Problems: Child labor Unsanitary and dangerous working conditions. Example: Children = cheap labor force. Dangerous working conditions…deaths did occur frequently.

Upton Sinclair “The Jungle” Solutions: Problems:
Theodore Roosevelt created the FDA and USDA. The meat inspection act created. Problems: Tainted and dirty meat. The American population confused about safety in canned foods. Example: Spoiled meat. Grinded meat with uneatable objects. Ex. Glass and rubber.

Ida Tarbel Solutions: Problems:
Revealed such monopolies and big bad businesses. Wrote several articles digging up such dirt. McClure’s Magazine carried her article on the Rockefeller corruption. Exposing the wrongs. Problems: Big business trusts and monopolies. Example: John D. Rockefeller. The standard oil company monopoly.
