Why Focus on Men of Color?
Below are few responses from 16 faculty and classified professials from Chabot college who attended a meet-up on 2/7/16 to discuss the TMOC training “A fireman will put water on the homes that are burning the most.” “Helping the men helps the women as well.” “There is plenty of statistical data supporting the need for additional support.” “TMOC training explains external pressures, racial & gender stereotypes, and gender socialization that make it even harder for men of color to succeed in CC. “In being ‘equity minded’ we naturally will focus on the most disproportionally impacted students.”

C. Principles of Teaching Men of Color
C. Mutual Respect & High Expectations A precursor to collaborative learning is mutual respect among faculty and students. Faculty members must model the expectations and norms for collaboration that they desire to see from students. This includes communicating care and compassion for students and authentic respect for multiple viewpoints that may differ from their own. Students must also be held to high expectations for creating an affirming learning environment for other students as well. This is especially important given that men of color may be apprehensive about engaging in ways that could reign erroneous stereotypes about them and their abilities. (Teaching Men of Color P. 64)
