Variables
2
Variable: any factor that can be changed, measured, or controlled.
Variables are used in an experiment to help scientists test a hypothesis There are 3 different types of Variables
3
1. Independent (manipulated)
The One variable that is Purposely changed to test a hypothesis Remember: “I change the Independent”
4
2. Dependent (responding)
The variable you Measure. The variable that changes in Response to the independent variable. Remember: “Responds is the Responding”
5
3. Controlled (constants)
The variable or variables that stay the same, stay constant Remember: “Controlled are Constant”
6
“ DRY MIX ” DRY Dependent/Responding Variable plotted on Y-Axis
MIX Manipulated/Independent Variable plotted on X-Axis
7
Example: Does the size of a paper airplane affect how far it flies?
Independent: ___________________________ Dependent: ____________________________ Controlled: _____________________________
8
Example: Does the size of a paper airplane affect how far it flies?
Independent: We change the Size of the paper Dependent: How far it flies, the distance, depends on how the independent variable Controlled: The paper type and the force at which it is thrown
