1 Renaissance Essential Question: Why is Florence referred to as the Cradle of the Renaissance?

3 Location Called the Cradle of the Renaissance. Between it was home to some of the greatest artists and thinkers of the Renaissance. Banking center of Europe.

4 Location Located on the Arno River.
Became the hub of the woolen- cloth trade. City dominated by the Medici family.

5 Location Banking and wool trade created enormous wealth. City could afford to be patrons of art. Many people came with new ideas and to study.

6 Advances in Architecture and Engineering
Architects studied Greek and Roman ruins. Cathedral built in 1296. Didn’t know how to finish the dome. Filippo Brunelleschi solved the problem. Duomo di Santa Maria del Fiore

The dome used no internal beams for support. 8 huge stone arches leaned against each other for support. Used hoists to raise materials and food. Finished in 1436. Duomo di Santa Maria del Fiore

8 Advances in Painting Artists wanted to show real people in lifelike ways with feelings. Discovery of perspective. Shading could make figures and objects look 3-D. Science and Math helped artists make advances. Oil based paints were now used.

9 Advances in Sculpture Sculptors wanted to show real people and emotions. They made freestanding statues that could be viewed in the round.

10 Advances in Sculpture Donatello influenced Michelangelo.
Both created statues of David. Michelangelo’s was much bigger. Michelangelo inspired other artists.

Before the Renaissance, writing was mostly religious. People writing in their own dialect instead of Latin. Dante was a leading writer. He inspired many other writers.

12 Advances in Science and Mathematics
People started question old ideas. Scientists started doing experiments. Leonardo was one of the most creative. He didn’t accept anything as true until he proved it himself.

Leonardo wrote about geometry, engineering, sound, motion, and architecture. He studied anatomy including the circulation of blood. Was also an inventor. Many other inventors made break throughs to include Galileo.

14 Florentine Politics Medici maintained power.
They had a strong military. Defeated enemies who plotted against them. Were forced into exile for two years.

15 Florentine Politics Machiavelli watched the struggles for power.
Wrote a book called “The Prince” that was about power and government. Rulers should be feared rather than loved.
