4. The Erie Canal Easier and cheaper to ship goods by water than land
In 1816, the Governor of New York proposed a 360-mile canal connecting Lake Erie to the Hudson River
This was the most ambitious project up to that time
Costs = $7 million with thousands of Irish immigrants building the canal

5. Transportation Revolution
More canals were built
As people moved west, special roads called turnpikes were built
In 1807, Robert Fulton invented the steamboat; this made transporting goods more efficient

6. Purchase of Florida: Adams-Onis Treaty (1819)
There were many disputes about the border between Spain and the United States
Spain wanted to get something out of the land, so they sold it for $5 million
US recognized that Spain had control of Texas

The state of Maryland passed a tax on the bank
McCulloch, the federal bank’s cashier refused to pay the tax
Supreme Court ruled the state could not tax a federal institution
Ogden got a license from the state of New York to operate a steamboat business between New York and New Jersey
Gibbons was granted a similar license by the federal government
Ogden sued to stop Gibbons from competing with him
Supreme Court ruled that Congress could regulate ferry boats crossing between states

8. Missouri Compromise of 1820
Issue of slavery had not been resolved yet
Slaves were needed in the south to grow cotton
After the purchase of the Louisiana Territory, the question about the new states being slave states or free states had to be answered
Every state south of the Compromise Line would be a slave state and every state north of the line would be a free state (except Missouri)

9. The Monroe Doctrine
James Monroe was elected president in 1817 (5th president)
In 1823, Monroe issued a bold statement on foreign policy
The US would stay out of all issues taking place in Europe
European countries needed to stop trying to colonize land in North and South America
