10 Niccolo Machiavelli Author of The Prince, published in He combined his personal experience of politics with his knowledge of the past to offer a guide to rulers on how to gain and maintain power. He stressed that the end justifies the means. His work continues to spark debate today as it raised important ethical questions about the nature of government and the use of power.
