1 French vs. Spanish La Salle’s colony was a failure BUT it alerted Spain to France’s interest in Texas. If Spain wanted to keep Texas, they must occupy it and build missions and settlements were the way to go.

2 Goals Spain wanted to protect New Spain from France, Native American, and England. Represented the Spanish government in Texas Teach Native Americans “the Spanish way”

3 Events Spain sent missionaries to establish missions.
Missions were religious communities used to convert American Indians to Catholicism and to develop settlements in Texas.

6 The San Antonio Settlements (200 years after the Conquistadors)
Why San Antonio?? The Spanish were determined to firmly establish mission system in East Texas. Problem was the distance 500 miles from nearest Spanish settlements. Difficult to get supplies to the missions. Journey was dangerous- American Natives attacks. In 1716 Spain decided to set up a mission-presidio midway between east Texas and New Spain…San Antonio!
