1 Nervous System Quiz

2 Physiology/Body Systems Test!
Next Monday/Tuesday 12/3 or 12/4 We will review this Thursday/Friday

3 Introduction to the Penguin “talking ball”
Guidelines: Whoever has the ball is speaking If you do not have the ball, you are tracking the speaker and NOT speaking DON’T DROP IT 

4 Nervous System and Reflexes Agenda
Nervous System Quiz (12) Nervous System Videos (10) Nervous System Lab (30) Nervous System CFU (5) Reflexes + Label the Reflex Arc Diagram (20) Nervous System and Reflexes Mastery Questions (15) Exit Slip (7)

5 CONCENTRATE Concentrate on the video as hard as you can, doing your best to not get distracted by other things around you. I will be taking notes on who can concentrate the longest on the video.

6 Turn to your neighbor and discuss what you were feeling/thinking throughout the entire video. Did your thoughts/feelings change? Share out your thoughts/feelings!

7 Your feelings and thoughts were all a response by your…
NERVOUS SYSTEM

8 Brainpop Neurons Video

9 Does talking on a cell phone hinder an individual’s ability to react quickly?

10 Introduction to the Penguin “talking ball”
Guidelines: Whoever has the ball is speaking If you do not have the ball, you are tracking the speaker and NOT speaking DON’T DROP IT 

11 Nervous System Lab: Sensation, Thought, and Response

12 Whiteboard check: Sensory, Inter, or Motor?
TYPES OF NEURONS. Fill in the blanks with sensory neuron, interneuron, or motor neuron: 1) __________________ send information from sense organs to the central nervous system, 2) _____________________ process the information, and 3) ______________ send information to muscles or glands for an action response.

13 Which sequence of neurons shows the correct pathway of sensation, thought, and response?
sensory neurons  motor neurons  interneurons. Sensory neurons  interneurons  motor neurons Motor neurons  sensory neurons  interneurons Interneurons  sensory neurons  motor neurons.

14 Which of the following is NOT an example of a sensory neuron?
Pressure sensor in skin Taste buds eye brain

15 Your brain sends a message to your quadriceps muscle to kick the soccer ball. The ____________________ is responsible for causing the movement in your muscle: Sensory neuron Motor neuron Interneuron in the brain Interneuron in the spinal cord

16 What happens when you touch a hot stove?
REFLEX

17 Reflex Arcs

18 Reflex Arcs Watch the video and discuss what happened with your neighbor.

19 Reacting to Changes You need to keep the conditions inside your body constant (maintain homeostasis). You need to detect a change in the environment (a stimulus) and react to the change (a response) in a way that maintains homeostasis. When you do this without thinking, it is called a reflex.

20 The Knee-Jerk Response
What is the stimulus? The hammer hits the tendon. What is the response? The muscle contracts, causing the foot to jerk upward.

21 Other Reflexes Stimulus Response The aroma of your favorite food
Salivation A nasty odor Nausea A bright light shining in your eye Pupils get smaller An insect flying towards your eye Blinking

22 Reflex Arc Diagram #1

23 Reflex Arc Diagram #2: Video

24 Reflex Arcs We will watch 3 times.

25 Whiteboards: Label the Reflex Arc Diagram
Word Bank: Stimulus Sensory neuron Interneuron Motor neuron Response E

26 How does the nervous system respond when you touch a hot stove?

27 Nervous System and Reflexes Mastery Questions

28 Exit Slip – p. 21L Answer the questions in your notebook on p 21L. Do NOT copy the questions. How is the nervous system related to smell, taste, touch, hearing, and sight? Explain how the nervous system keeps organisms alive.  Compare the three types of neurons to parts of a computer. Explain each connection you have made. Ex. Sensory neurons are like the keyboard or mouse because they sense changes.
