1 The Johari Window Developed by Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham
(the word “Johari” comes from Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham). Information Sources:

2

3 key concepts: Individuals can build trust between themselves by disclosing information about themselves. They can learn about themselves and come to terms with personal issues with the help of feedback from others.

4 The four quadrants are:
Quadrant 1: Open Area What is known by self & others. Characterised by openness & honesty, working together The larger this area, the more ‘available’ the person is

5 Quadrant 2: Blind Area, or "Blind Spot“
What is unknown by self but is known / apparent to others This can be simple information, for example having a tendency to dominate in meetings. Or can involve deep issues for example feelings of inadequacy, incompetence, unworthiness, or rejection, which are difficult for individuals to face directly and yet may be seen by others This area can be ‘discovered’ in groups, where we may be under scrutiny

6 Quadrant 3: Hidden or Avoided Area
What the person knows about him / herself that others do not. For example in a counselling session, the counsellor may ‘steer’ a client away from talking about feelings they have for someone who is married due to their own feelings regarding fidelity

7 Quadrant 4: Unknown Area / Unconscious
What is unknown by to self & others. Self & Others may discover new behaviour or motives that pre-existed out of awareness, although the potential was always there for example you may discover your ability to act calmly & efficiently in an emergency situation

8 Key Points: Social norms suggest we should not be over friendly or reveal too much about ourselves too soon, this may reflect those who struggle in relating to others. Shy individuals may struggle to increase Quadrant 1, or may hide behind a flurry of words which reveal little about self. Developing a larger quadrant 1 is not simply an indicator of gregariousness or sociability, it is focused on personal freedom, ability to work with others. The Open Area is the ‘space’ where good communications and cooperation occur, free from confusion, conflict and misunderstanding. Self-disclosure is the process by which people expand the Open Area vertically. Feedback is the process by which people expand this area horizontally. By encouraging healthy self-disclosure and sensitive feedback, you can build a stronger sense of self and be more effective
