1 More on sustainability

2 Suburbs are NOT a sustainable way to build a city!

3 Why are suburbs not sustainable?
Well because of “suburban sprawl” Since the houses tend to be far away from the work place, people must commute long distances in cars to get to and from work This emits lots of Carbon dioxide and wastes a lot of gas The excess CO2 can be a contributing factor to climate change

4 As you can see, many suburban yards have green grass
As you can see, many suburban yards have green grass. In a semi arid area like southern cali, this means lots of water is used. Very wasteful.

5 Suburbs also lead to habitat destruction
This ends up displacing many native species and can create tensions between animals and people

6 Compact or sustainable urban living
Although this is not a real city, this is an example of what compact urban living could look like, you work, live, shop and go to school all within walking distance and leave lots of green space surrounding the living center

7 Green building and passive solar design

8 Passive solar design -Does not use electricity.
-Instead, uses design and materials and orientation as a way to heat and cool a building

9 Green roofs-another great strategy for cooling a building and providing habitat

17 And

18 One of the most problematic effects of not living sustainably is……..
POLLUTION “The effects in living organisms may range from mild discomfort to serious diseases such as cancer to physical deformities; ex., extra or missing limbs in frogs.”

19 Effects of Pollution

20 Pollution affects Plants too 

21 Two general categories for pollution…….
Point Source - "A point source is a stationary location or fixed facility from which pollutants are discharged or emitted or any single, identifiable discharge point of pollution, such as a pipe, ditch, or smokestack." - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2010b

22 Non-Point Source - "A pollution source that cannot be defined as originating from discrete points such as pipe discharge. Areas of fertilizer and pesticide applications, atmospheric deposition, manure, and natural inputs from plants and trees are types of nonpoint source pollution." - U.S. Geological Survey, 2007
