Texas Writers F--1. History of Texas by Henderson Yoakum was one of the first published books on the state’s history. O--2. The adventures of cowhands and the cattle industry have inspired the most interesting books ever written by Texas historical writers.

3 F--3. J. Frank Dobie is acknowledged as one of the first writers to collect and preserve Texas folklore. F--4. Americo Paredes collected stories of Gregorio Cortez Lira, a well-known Mexican folk hero who evaded the Texas Rangers. O--5. William Sydney Porter wrote under an unusual pen name.

4 O--6. The best way for writers to become famous in Texas is to use their childhood or adult experiences as the basis for their books. F--7. One reason Diane Gonzales Bertrand began to write stories was that she found few books that reflected the experience of growing up in an English-speaking, middle-class Latino household.

11 Lesson 2-The People of Texas Texas’s Population
1. What was the only state that had a larger population than Texas in 2010? California 2. How did the population growth rate in Texas compare with the national growth rate for the 10 years from 2000 to 2010? The Texas growth rate for those 10 years was much higher than the national rate. 3. What effect did Texas’s growth rate from 2000 to 2010 have on the U.S. House of Representatives? Texas gained four more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Most other states stayed the same or lost seats.

4. Why is this effect important? Texas will have an even stronger voice in the U.S. government because of these added seats. 15 Looking Ahead 1. to prepare for changes in schools, transportation, health care, employment, and social services 2. The state’s population will still grow, but it will happen much less rapidly.  

16 3. More schools, sports fields, and recreational centers will need to be built. More doctors who specialize in children’s illnesses will be needed. Companies will want to move to these communities. 4. Nursing homes and other medical facilities for older people will be needed. Employers have to have enough younger workers with the right skills to fill the jobs of retired workers. Employers may have to change the way work is conducted in the workplace in order to attract younger people.
