WCHS Chemistry

Can you filter out sugar from sugar water?
THINKER QUESTION! Can you filter out sugar from sugar water? NO!!! → the sugar is DISSOLVED! Filtration only works with INSOLUBLE SOLIDS
3
Candle DEMO What will happen to the mass of a candle after it has been lit for a while? Prediction → Increase, Decrease, Stay the Same? Initial Mass =
4
Solution vs. Aqueous Solution vs. Liquid
Liquid - A pure substance Ex: water, mercury, ethanol Solution - a homogeneous mixture composed of dissolved ions (something dissolved in something else) Ex: Kool Aid, saltwater, chemicals we use in class. Aqueous Solution - a water-based mixture Symbol = (aq) Solute - what is being dissolved Solvent - what does the dissolving
5
Solution vs. Aqueous Solution vs. Liquid
Solubility - ability to dissolve Soluble = CAN dissolve Insoluble = CANNOT dissolve Saturation - when no more of the solute can be dissolved TT Challenge
6
Chemical Equations REACTANTS PRODUCTS YIELDS/PRODUCES/MAKES SOLID
NOT an equals sign!!! Chemical Equations SOLID REACTANTS PRODUCTS Precipitate = the formation of a solid in a solution What type of change is this? CHEMICAL How can I separate this? FILTER! Mass of Products = Mass of Reactants
7
Law of Conservation of Mass/Matter
Matter can’t be created or destroyed Mass before = Mass after
8
Candle DEMO What will happen to the mass of a candle after it has been lit for a while? Prediction → Increase, Decrease, Stay the Same? Initial Mass = Final Mass = DID WE JUST BREAK THE LAW!?!?!?!?!??!
